Thanks for sharing your experience with the A3. My case with the A1 was quite similar, and the repair also fixed my rough idle completely. The fuel system repair sorted out the cold start problems I was having too. Did you track the fuel efficiency after the fix? Curious if you noticed immediate improvement. Also, what did the total repair cost you? My mechanic hinted it could be pricey but never gave me a clear estimate. Been about 6 months since I had mine fixed, no issues since, but keeping an eye on it, especially during cold weather. Did anything else come up with yours after the initial repair?

Since having my A3 fixed by a diesel engine specialist, the fuel filter heater repair turned out to be quite straightforward. The mechanic found a faulty cable connection at the heater element, which cost 95 Euro to fix. Much cheaper than I initially feared. The fuel efficiency improved dramatically within the first tank after the repair. The power loss issues disappeared completely, and the rough idle never returned. The engine now runs smoothly even in cold conditions, without any signs of engine stalling or starting problems. Its been over two years since the repair, and I havent experienced any related issues. The fuel system has been working flawlessly, even during the coldest months. Regular maintenance and fuel filter changes have kept everything running properly. Just make sure to use quality diesel fuel and stick to the recommended service intervals to prevent similar issues from developing again.

After seeing your reply, I finally took my A1 to a specialized diesel workshop last week. The mechanic found exactly what you described, a bad connection at the fuel filter heater. The whole repair, including parts and labor, came to 180 Euro. The difference in performance was immediate. The engine runs perfectly smooth now, no more rough idle or power loss issues. Fuel consumption dropped back to normal levels after just one tank. What a relief not having to worry about the engine stalling anymore. The shop also did a thorough inspection of the entire fuel system and fuel lines while they had it apart. They showed me the old components, the connections were definitely corroded. Really glad I got it sorted before any major damage occurred. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. Would have saved time and money if I had gone to a diesel specialist from the start instead of that first repair shop.

As an A3 TDI owner from 2013, I encountered nearly identical symptoms when my fuel filter heater failed. The rough idle and power loss are typical indicators of fuel system issues in these diesel engines. The fuel filter heater plays a crucial role in preventing fuel from gelling in cold conditions. When it fails, it often creates similar symptoms to a clogged fuel filter. In my case, the problem was traced to corroded electrical connections at the fuel filter housing, which caused intermittent heating function. The repair required: Complete fuel filter replacement, New wiring harness for the heater element, Cleaning of the fuel line connections, Reprogramming of the engine control module This is a serious issue that can lead to complete fuel system failure if left unaddressed. The symptoms typically worsen over time, and the increased fuel consumption happens because the engine runs rich to compensate for poor fuel delivery. Recommend having a certified technician specifically check: 1. Electrical connectivity at the filter housing 2. Resistance readings of the heater element 3. Fuel pressure readings 4. Full diagnostic scan for related fault codes The repair is straightforward for shops familiar with diesel engine fuel systems, but proper diagnosis is essential.
