Thanks for the detailed writeup. Your A3 problem sounds exactly like what I am experiencing with my A2. The noisy cold starts and exhaust system issues were making me nervous. Did you remember roughly what you paid for the exhaust repair? Would be helpful to know what to expect cost-wise. Also curious if you have had any other exhaust flaps or engine performance problems since getting it fixed? I want to make sure I address everything while its at the shop.

Good news, after getting that same exhaust flaps issue fixed on my A3, everything has been running perfectly. The repair cost me 190 Euro total, which included the new flap motor and control module installation. The exhaust noise and rough cold starts completely disappeared once the new components were installed. Have not experienced any engine performance issues or problems with the exhaust system since the repair was done. The key was using genuine parts rather than aftermarket alternatives. The exhaust valves are now working exactly as they should, maintaining proper back pressure and sound levels at all times. My advice would be to get it checked soon, as leaving faulty exhaust flaps unfixed can lead to more expensive problems down the line. The investment was definitely worth it for the improved running condition and quieter operation.

Thanks for the input. I finally got my A2 checked out at a different shop that specializes in VAG engines. The exhaust repair cost me 210 Euro, slightly more than expected but worth every cent. The mechanic confirmed it was indeed a failed exhaust flap motor causing the noise and rough running. They found some minor exhaust blockage too, which they cleared during the repair. The whole job took about 3 hours since they had to remove several components to access the exhaust valves properly. Started up perfectly this morning, no more loud exhaust noise or rough idle. The engine runs smooth as new, even during cold starts. Really glad I got this fixed before it could cause any additional exhaust system damage. For anyone reading this later with similar issues, definitely get it checked by someone who knows these engines well. The symptoms might seem minor at first, but proper diagnosis and repair makes a huge difference.

Had the same symptoms on my 2003 Audi A3 1.8T. The exhaust flaps were stuck open, causing excessive noise and rough idle during cold starts. The problem turned out to be a failed flap motor, which controls the exhaust valves that regulate back pressure and sound. The repair involved replacing both the flap motor and the associated control module. It was a serious issue because leaving it unfixed can impact engine performance and potentially cause additional exhaust system damage. The tricky part was accessing the components, as they are located in a tight spot near the rear exhaust section. The key is finding a shop that specifically knows exhaust components on VAG engines. Make sure they do a proper diagnostic first, the symptoms could also indicate other issues like a cracked manifold or failed actuator. Getting the error code read will narrow down the exact problem. Worth noting that aftermarket parts often dont last as long as OEM exhaust flaps for these models. Would recommend using genuine parts despite the higher cost to avoid repeat failures.
