Audi A4 Diesel (2007): Problems with black smoke, engine light, irregular engine running and DPF - possible cause exhaust back pressure sensor?

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Check engine light on

DPF regeneration failure

Unsteady engine

Loss of engine power

Poor fuel economy

Hey guys, I've noticed a few problems with my 2007 Audi A4 diesel. Black smoke comes out of the exhaust when I accelerate, the check engine light is on, irregular engine running, DPF regeneration failure and the fuel consumption is also high. I suspect that it could be the exhaust back pressure sensor on the diesel particulate filter. Have you had similar experiences and how did you get this solved in your workshop? I'm looking forward to your tips and experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I can contribute something to your situation. I have an Audi A3 Diesel, model year 2005, and had a similar mishap. My car knowledge is not particularly high, but I'm always happy to learn. I had exactly the same symptoms and the reason was that the DPF was heavily loaded. At my garage, they first read out the error codes and identified the problem. It was a laborious process, but the repairs cost a total of 1800 euros. It was expensive, but afterwards the car ran like the first day. Perhaps it would make sense for you to do the same at your garage. What information can you provide about your car's exhaust back pressure sensor? Maybe I can give you more details when I know more about your car. Happy to help!

Hey, thanks for the tip. Well, my car has already done well with 192600 km on the clock. Nothing special was found at the last service, but the problems started after that. The pressure sensor hasn't been looked at in detail yet - maybe I should have that done. I'm just a bit worried about the cost when I see what you paid... But what don't you do for your darlings, right?

Hey, no problem, always happy to help! I can well understand your concerns, my mileage was already pretty high too. I know the costs sound scary at first, but maybe you don't need to replace everything. A thorough diagnosis in the workshop can really clarify things. However, I would advise you to have the exhaust back pressure sensor checked in more detail, as this could be one of the main reasons why your car is reacting like this. And even if it's expensive: Safety and a good running car are worth it, right? Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Thanks again! You're right, safety comes first and I don't want to say goodbye to my trusty vehicle just yet. I'll have the pressure sensor checked and will report what comes out. Fingers crossed that it won't be that expensive! See you then!
