Audi A4 Diesel Glow Plug Module Failure Warning Signs

Had the exact same issue on my 2012 Audi A6 3.0 TDI last winter. The preheating unit malfunction often starts with exactly these symptoms, constant glow plug indicator and engine light, followed by white smoke during acceleration. The electrical fault was traced to a failing heating module connection, which affected the entire preheating system. The vehicle heater control unit needed complete replacement since the original unit had severe internal damage from water ingress. This explained the erratic glow plug behavior and smoke issues. The car electronics diagnosis showed multiple errors related to the preheating circuit. While checking the system, the technician found corroded wiring near the heating module, which is a known weak point in these engines. This is considered a serious repair since it affects cold starts and engine performance. If left unaddressed, it can lead to increased fuel consumption and potential engine damage. The repair requires specialized diagnostic equipment to properly reset the car electronics after component replacement. For proper repair, insist on complete system diagnosis and verification of all glow plug functions after the heating module replacement. A proper fix should resolve both the smoke and indicator issues permanently.

Thanks for describing that heating module issue. My Audi A4 got fixed about 6 months ago with similar symptoms. The defective part was indeed the preheating unit, along with some corroded wiring that needed replacement. Really curious, what was your final repair cost? Also wondering if everything has been running smoothly since the fix? My total came to 780 Euro for parts and labor, which seemed reasonable given the work involved.

Really glad to update on my repair experience. The heating module issue was fully resolved and cost way less than expected, just 95 Euro to fix a defective cable connection at the preheater control unit. The mechanic found the car electronics were actually fine, it was just a faulty plug causing the problems. The car preheater has worked flawlessly since the repair six months ago. No more white smoke, warning lights, or cold start issues. The vehicle heater operates exactly as it should. Much simpler fix than the complete unit replacement I initially feared. Sounds like your repair was more extensive with the corroded wiring replacement. That explains the higher cost in your case. These heating module issues can vary quite a bit in severity, sometimes its just a connection problem like mine, other times the defective part requires full replacement.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies. Just wanted to share how my story ended, took it to a specialist shop yesterday who diagnosed it properly right away. The ignition system showed multiple faults connected to the preheating unit. They found extensive corrosion damage that affected both the heating module and surrounding wiring. Total repair came to 680 Euro including a new preheating unit, wiring repairs, and labor. More than I hoped but less than I feared. The engine preheat indicator is now working normally, no more smoke issues, and cold starts are perfect again. Really happy I got it properly fixed this time instead of another band-aid solution. Car runs like new now, definitely worth getting it done right by someone who knew exactly what they were dealing with. Big difference from my previous failed repair attempts that never fully solved the problem.
