Audi A4 Fuel Sensor Causes Random Engine Stalling

My Audi A4 2007 keeps stalling and showing check engine light after 28673km. Already had some trouble with mechanics before. The stored error code points to a faulty fuel sensor issue. Engine acts up especially when idling. Car runs on gas. Has anyone dealt with similar fuel gauge problems and can recommend what needs fixing? Looking for your experiences before heading to another repair shop.

Had the same sensor fault issue on my Audi A6 2010 2.0 TFSI. The fuel gauge started showing incorrect readings and the engine would stall at idle. The car dashboard kept displaying check engine light intermittently. The root cause was a combination of two problems: Faulty fuel level sensor in the tank, Corroded wiring harness connecting to the sensor Car electronics needed complete diagnosis since multiple systems were affected. The fuel pump assembly had to be removed to access and replace the sensor. The wiring harness also required replacement due to significant corrosion at the connector points. This was a serious issue that could have led to getting stranded due to inaccurate fuel readings. The car would also stall unexpectedly which created safety concerns. The full repair involved: Removing fuel tank, Replacing fuel level sensor unit, Installing new wiring harness, Clearing fault codes, Testing fuel gauge calibration After the fix, both the stalling and incorrect fuel gauge readings were resolved completely. Would recommend getting this checked soon as it typically worsens over time.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the A6. Sounds exactly like what I am dealing with on my A4. I am relieved to hear replacing the fuel level sensor and wiring fixed the stalling issues. The symptoms match perfectly, incorrect fuel gauge readings and engine cutting out at idle. Mind sharing how much the total repair cost was? Also curious if you have had any similar fuel system problems since getting it fixed? Want to make sure this will be a permanent solution before spending money at the shop.

The repair turned out to be less complex than expected on my A6. After seeing a mechanic last week, they diagnosed the fuel level sensor fault and found a blown fuse was causing the erratic readings on the car dashboard. Total repair cost was only 52 Euro since it just needed the fuse replacement. Much cheaper than the full sensor and wiring work I initially thought would be needed. The fuel gauge now shows accurate readings and the car runs perfectly at idle. Been driving for over a month since the fix with no fuel system issues whatsoever. The engine runs smoothly and the check engine light has stayed off. Based on this experience, definitely get it checked, could be something simple like in my case rather than a major sensor replacement. Just make sure they do a complete diagnostic of the fuel system before starting any repairs. Sometimes what seems like a complex sensor problem has a straightforward solution.

Thanks for the input. Finally took my A4 to a repair shop last week. The mechanic found the fuel level sensor was actually fine, but there was significant carbon buildup causing the sensor fault readings. The repair included: Full system diagnostic check, Fuel injector cleaning, New fuel filter installation, Computer reset Total came to 180 Euro which was reasonable compared to what I expected. The car has been running great since, no more stalling or check engine lights. The fuel gauge now shows correct readings and idle is smooth. Really glad I asked here first instead of rushing into expensive repairs. Sometimes these car electronics issues turn out simpler than they seem. Will update if any issues return, but so far the fix seems solid after a week of daily driving.
