Audi A4 Sedan problems with the EGR valve

Do any of you have experience with a 2009 Audi A4 Diesel that is acting all weird? My car shows the following symptoms: The "Check Engine" indicator light is on, the engine stalls on its own, the power decreases, the engine runs rough, there is a strong smell of exhaust fumes, the car wobbles when idling and the speed drops to 0. I thought that the problem might be with the EGR valve. If you have ever had a problem like this, how did you solve it and what did your garage do? I'm looking forward to your experiences and tips.

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Audi A4 Diesel is experiencing issues such as the "Check Engine" light, engine stalling, decreased power, rough running, exhaust fumes, wobbling when idling, and speed dropping to zero. These symptoms suggest a potential problem with the EGR valve, possibly due to contamination or defectiveness. A similar case with an Audi A3 was resolved by replacing the faulty EGR valve, which restored normal vehicle function. It is recommended to have the EGR valve checked and possibly replaced to address these issues.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I had a similar problem with my Audi A3 Diesel from 2007. I'm not a mechanic, but I do have some experience with cars. It had exactly the same symptoms as your A4. I then took the car to the garage. They discovered that my EGR valve was defective and stuck. They replaced the old valve and fitted a new one. That cost me around 355 euros in total. Since the replacement, my car has been running perfectly again, no more problems since then. However, I would need a little more information about your car to be able to help you specifically. How many kilometers does it have on it, how often is it driven and has anything ever been done to the exhaust system? Hopefully I've been able to help you a little.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. My Audi now has 176543 km on it and was recently serviced. I drive it to work every day, so quite often and as far as I know, nothing has ever been done to the exhaust system. Hope this info helps you. Thanks again!

Hey, thanks for the additional information. So with the number of kilometers and daily use, it's actually not unusual for the EGR valve to go on strike. In my case, the fault was caused by contamination. If your car has never had anything done to the exhaust system, I would almost guess that it could be the EGR valve. I would recommend that you have this checked in the workshop. It's annoying because of the cost, of course, but if it's the valve, replacing it is unavoidable. The whole mess is annoying, but a broken EGR valve can be a real problem. Hope that helps you a bit. I'm no expert, but I would have it checked. Have a good trip and hopefully it's nothing serious!

Hey, thanks for the additional advice. You're right, I really should have the car checked out at the garage. As the car has never had any problems with the exhaust system, it could actually be the EGR valve. It doesn't have to be, but I don't want to take any risks. It will have to be done, even if it costs money. In any case, your experience has helped me a lot. Thanks again and have a good trip!
