Audi A6 2004 Diesel: Defective charge air temperature sensor?

Hi, I currently have a strange problem with my Audi A6 2004 Diesel. When I accelerate, black smoke comes out of the exhaust, the check engine light comes on, engine power is lost, the car twitches when accelerating, there is a loud hissing and whistling noise, also very high consumption and a strong exhaust smell. I suspect it is the charge air temperature sensor. Have any of you had similar experiences or any troubleshooting tips? Would like to know how this was resolved in your workshop. Thanks for your help!

Summary of the thread

An Audi A6 2004 Diesel is experiencing issues such as black smoke, loss of engine power, a check engine light, loud noises, high fuel consumption, and a strong exhaust smell. The suspected cause is a defective charge air temperature sensor. Similar cases have been resolved by replacing this sensor, which typically costs around 165-170 euros. It is recommended to have the fault memory read to confirm the issue before proceeding with the replacement.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I had a similar problem with my Audi A6 2006 diesel. My garage changed the charge air temperature sensor, which cost me 165 euros and since then the problem has been solved.

Hey, thanks for your answer! I've had my A6 for about 10 years and it currently has 263432 km on the clock. I've heard that with high mileage such problems occur regularly, maybe that's the reason. I think I'll take the car to the garage and have the charge air temperature sensor checked or replaced. I hope it's not too expensive. Learned something again, thanks!

Hey buddy, I feel you! I had exactly the same problem recently with my Audi A6 2005 diesel, which has just cracked the 250,000 km mark. For me, the charge air temperature sensor was actually the culprit. I had similar symptoms to yours - black smoke, loss of power, strange noises and the fuel consumption had gone through the roof. I then took the car to my regular garage and they immediately read out the fault memory. It was then clear that the charge air temperature sensor was faulty. They then replaced it on the spot. It cost me about 170 euros. Since then, the car has been running like clockwork again! It's best to read out the fault memory first. Especially if the engine light is on, it could be that several error codes are stored.

Hey, thanks for the info! It's good to know that I'm not the only one with problems like this. I'll visit the garage and ask them to read the fault memory. Hopefully it's just the charge air temperature sensor. The costs seem to be manageable and if it really solves the problem, it would be worth every penny. I'll give you an update when I know more. Thanks again and see you soon!
