Audi A6 DPF Failure Causing Smoke and Warning Lights

Need urgent advice, my 2012 Audi A6 diesel (76000km) is showing multiple warning lights and producing smoke under acceleration. Vehicle diagnostics show no DPF regeneration happening. The auto repair shop I visited last time didnt convince me with their service quality, so Im looking for recommendations. Could this be related to an exhaust sensor or back pressure issue? Has anyone experienced similar emission control problems with their A6? Looking for reliable mechanic suggestions and possible repair costs.

My 2015 Audi A7 3.0 TDI had nearly identical symptoms last season. The vehicle diagnostics revealed a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor, which prevented proper DPF regeneration cycles from initiating. The symptoms matched exactly: multiple warning lights, smoke during acceleration, and failed regeneration attempts. This was a serious issue requiring immediate attention since continued driving risks complete DPF failure and potential engine damage. The repair involved: Complete diagnostic scan, Removal and replacement of back pressure sensor, Forced DPF regeneration cycle, Reset of emission control systems, Testing under load conditions The entire repair took two full working days due to the complexity of accessing the exhaust system components. The issue was definitely serious, as improper back pressure readings can damage expensive emission control components if left unaddressed. It sounds like your A6 is displaying classic symptoms of this exact failure. Getting it fixed promptly will prevent cascading issues with other emission control components. Look specifically for shops with Audi diagnostic capabilities and emission system certification.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the back pressure sensor issue. Your symptoms match what Im currently dealing with on my A6. Had it happen about 6 months ago and went ahead with the full repair including sensor replacement and system reset. Curious, can you recall what the total cost was for your repair? My car maintenance schedule is coming up soon and Im wondering if I should plan for any follow-up work. Since fixing the exhaust sensor, have you noticed any other vehicle emissions problems? Some forum members mentioned potential issues with related components in the exhaust system that might need attention later.

Had the same concern about related exhaust system issues, but after fixing the exhaust back pressure sensor for 245 Euro, engine performance has been perfect. The repair completely resolved the vehicle emissions warnings and smoke issues. No additional problems have surfaced in the exhaust system since the fix. The mechanic did a thorough job testing all connected components during the repair. The initial diagnosis was spot on, it was purely a faulty back pressure sensor causing the regeneration problems. Regular maintenance schedule should be fine from here. Just keep monitoring for any changes in engine performance or new warning lights. The repair shop confirmed the other emission control components were in good condition when they did the work. Worth noting the repair cost was reasonable considering the specialized diagnostic equipment needed and the critical role the sensor plays in proper DPF function. Much cheaper than risking damage to other exhaust system parts by delaying the fix.

After doing my research and getting helpful advice here, I went ahead and had my A6 repaired last week. The shop found the exact issue with the exhaust back pressure sensor that was preventing proper DPF regeneration. The total repair came to 280 Euro and took about 6 hours. They performed: Full vehicle diagnostics scan, Pressure sensor replacement, System reset, Test drive to verify engine performance Really glad I didnt wait longer, as the technician showed me how the faulty sensor was affecting the entire emission control system. The smoke and warning lights are completely gone now. Engine performance is back to normal with no issues during acceleration. The exhaust system is working perfectly after the fix. Will definitely keep up with regular maintenance to avoid similar problems. Thanks to everyone who helped identify this fairly common issue with the pressure sensor. Saved me from potentially bigger repairs down the road.
