Audi A6 MOST Bus Failure Kills All Media Functions

Hi fellow car enthusiasts. My 2004 Audi A6 with a 114099km gasoline engine is having problems with the entire multimedia system. The audio system is completely dead, navigation wont work, and the car diagnostics showed some stored errors. I suspect its related to a MOST bus fault in the fiber optics system. Has anyone dealt with similar issues? Looking for recommendations on how to proceed and what repair costs to expect. Want to avoid getting overcharged at the shop after a recent bad experience with another repair.

Had the same issue on my 2007 Audi A4 2.0T. The MOST bus network failure caused a complete shutdown of the audio system and navigation components. The automotive protocol diagnostic revealed multiple control unit communication errors. The root cause was a faulty fiber optic ring connector in the data transmission circuit. These optical connectors are critical components that can break down over time, disrupting signal flow between entertainment modules. The main symptom was similar, total failure of the multimedia functions. This required removing several interior panels to access and replace the damaged optical ring connector plus reprogramming the affected control units. While not a mechanical issue affecting vehicle operation, it is considered a complex car electronics repair due to the specialized diagnostic equipment and expertise needed. The repair process took about 4 hours at the shop. This is not something for DIY unless you have professional diagnostic tools and experience with fiber optic repairs. Would recommend having it diagnosed at a shop that specializes in Audi electrical systems to properly identify which component in the MOST system has failed.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the MOST bus repair. My audio system is now working perfectly after getting it fixed. Really helped having your detailed explanation about the fiber optic ring connector issue when I went to the shop. Saved me from getting quoted for unnecessary work. Just wondering, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the entire repair? Also curious if you had any other car diagnostics issues pop up with the entertainment system since getting it fixed? Want to make sure the repair shop I used charged a fair price for the data transmission repair work they did on my Audi A6.

After getting my Audi A4 MOST bus network repaired, I havent experienced any more issues with the entertainment system. The car diagnostics have been clean, with no new control unit errors appearing. The automotive protocol is now functioning exactly as intended. The total repair cost for my MOST bus fault was 1000 Euro, which included both parts and labor. This covered replacing a defective control unit that was disrupting the bus network communication. While it might seem steep, the specialized diagnostic equipment and expertise needed for fiber optic repairs justify the cost. Based on what you described, it sounds like your repair shop identified and fixed a similar issue. The price range is typically consistent for this type of specialized electronics repair, especially when it involves replacing components in the MOST system rather than just reconnecting loose cables. Since the fix has resolved your audio system problems completely, it suggests they correctly diagnosed and repaired the root cause, which is what matters most with complex automotive protocol issues like this.

Thanks for the advice. Just wanted to share an update after getting my A6 fixed last week. The mechanic found exactly what was described, a damaged fiber optic ring that was causing the MOST bus failure. The repair took around 5 hours total and cost me 950 Euro. The control unit had to be reprogrammed after replacing the faulty components in the audio system. The car electronics are all working perfectly now, nav system, sound, everything. The car diagnostics show no more communication errors in the bus system. Really glad I researched this before going in. When the shop mentioned fiber optics issues, I knew exactly what they were talking about thanks to this thread. Saved me from agreeing to unnecessary additional work they tried suggesting. Much better experience than my last repair shop visit. Will definitely use them again if I have any other electronic issues pop up.
