Audi A7 Brake Switch Issues: DIY Fix Guide & Warning Signs

Looking for advice on brake light switch problems in my 2011 A7. The cars error memory shows a fault, plus I get a brake light failure warning and error message on the display. Just had a not-so-great experience at my mechanic last time, so want to hear if anyone dealt with similar symptoms and how their switch replacement went. My ride has 73k on the clock with a gas engine. Any red flags I should watch for when getting this fixed?

Had the exact same brake light switch issue on my 2014 A6 3.0TFSI. The brake system warning appeared out of nowhere on cold starts, triggering both the dash light and error message. The brake light switch failure is a common electrical issue in these models. The switch itself deteriorates over time, sending incorrect signals to the control module. This causes intermittent brake light function and false warnings. The switch replacement is a straightforward repair that takes about an hour. The part is located above the brake pedal assembly. Main risk to watch for is ensuring proper calibration after installation, an incorrectly positioned switch can cause cruise control and start-stop system malfunctions. In my case, diagnostic testing confirmed the faulty switch rather than wiring problems. The repair included switch replacement, clearing error codes, and testing all brake light functions. This resolved both the warning messages and restored proper brake light operation. While not a critical safety issue if your brake system otherwise works normally, it should be addressed soon since properly functioning brake lights are legally required.

Thanks for sharing that fix. Same thing happened with my Audi A7, those annoying brake light warnings popping up on cold mornings. Got the brake switch replaced and the electrical issue cleared up right away. The brake pedal feels much more responsive now too. Just curious, do you remember what you paid for the repair? Mine was done a while back but prices probably changed. Also, has your brake light system stayed problem-free since the fix? Sometimes these cars can have related issues pop up down the road.

Actually, a funny update on my A6 brake light switch situation, turned out no replacement was needed at all. When I went back to the mechanic, they found the switch was working perfectly. The warnings were happening because I had a habit of resting my foot on the brake pedal while parked, which confused the brake system sensors. After adjusting my parking habits, making sure to completely release the brake pedal, the brake light warnings disappeared completely. The brake system has worked flawlessly since then, with zero cost since it was just a personal error rather than a faulty switch. This is why proper diagnosis is crucial, what seems like a bad brake light switch can sometimes be resolved without any parts replacement. If anyone gets similar warnings, its worth checking your brake pedal position habits first before assuming the switch needs replacement.

Thanks everyone for the advice, wanted to share how my repair turned out. Took it to a new mechanic last week who actually spent time diagnosing before replacing parts. The automotive switch needed replacing after all, but the repair was simpler than expected. Total cost came to 180 Euro including parts and labor. The vehicle safety check they ran showed everything else was working properly. Best part is the mechanic explained exactly what they were doing instead of just handing me a bill. The electrical issue got fully resolved, no more warning lights or error messages since the repair. Brake lights are working perfectly now. Much better experience than my last repair shop visit. For anyone facing similar problems, make sure your mechanic does proper diagnostics before jumping to switch replacement. Those warning signals dont always mean you need expensive repairs.
