Audi A8 Key Fob Dead, Troubleshooting Tips Inside

My keyless entry system suddenly stopped working on my 2013 Audi A8 (3.0L gas, 45235km). The electronic key no longer unlocks the doors automatically and the car shows an error message. The key fob itself seems unresponsive. Already got the dreaded low battery warning for the key. Has anyone dealt with this issue? Looking for advice before heading to a shop since my last mechanic visit was less than ideal. Simple fob battery replacement or potentially something worse?

Last month I had the same issue with my 2016 Audi A6 3.0T. The key fob became unresponsive and displayed the low battery warning. While a dead key fob battery is often the culprit, in my case the problem went beyond a simple battery replacement. The initial auto key diagnosis revealed two issues: a depleted fob battery and a worn signal receiver in the door handle. Even after replacing the battery, the keyless entry remained inconsistent. The door handle sensor needed replacement to fully restore the system functionality. The repair process involved: 1. Testing the key fob signal strength 2. Replacing the original fob battery 3. Removing door panels 4. Installing new door handle sensors 5. Reprogramming the key to sync with new components If your key fob is completely unresponsive, start with replacing the battery, its typically the most common fix. However, given the age of your A8, prepare for the possibility of worn door sensors. The repair was not particularly complex but required specialized diagnostic equipment to properly sync the new components. The key programming must be done with proper equipment, so this job typically requires professional service regardless of the root cause.

Thanks for that detailed response. Your experience sounds very similar to what I am dealing with on my A8. I also got the low voltage warning before the electronic key stopped working completely. Did you remember roughly what the total repair cost was? And has everything been working fine since the fix with both the battery replacement and those door sensors?

Just had everything sorted out last week actually. The key battery replacement alone was 37 Euro and fixed the low battery warning completely. The car key is working perfectly now, both the unlock and lock functions are as responsive as new. For total transparency about costs, the door handle sensors were quite a bit more expensive than the key fob battery fix, but since you are only showing the battery warning right now, you might not need the sensor replacement I did. My suggestion would be to first try the simpler fix of replacing the dead key battery before considering other repairs. Been using the car daily since the repair and the key fob performance has been flawless, no more warning messages or unresponsive moments. A good auto key specialist should be able to quickly diagnose if you need anything beyond the battery replacement.

After getting the advice, I decided to get it checked out. Went to a local auto key specialist who diagnosed the problem in about 15 minutes. Turns out it was just a simple key fob battery issue, nothing wrong with the door sensors thankfully. The electronic key was fixed with a fresh battery for 42 Euro, much better than what I feared it might cost. The key battery replacement took only a few minutes and the technician even showed me how to do it myself next time. The keyless entry system is now working perfectly again. No more error messages on the dash and the doors respond instantly when I approach the car. Much relieved it was just a basic fob battery problem and not something more serious with the door handle sensors. Total time at the shop was under 30 minutes. Really glad I asked here first before assuming the worst.
