Audi A8 Rear Sunblind Mechanism Fails During Operation

My sunblind in the rear window is completely stuck and wont move anymore. The car computer shows an error code related to this issue. Has anyone experienced similar problems with their A8? Its a 2013 model with the gasoline engine at 128173 KM. Getting a bit nervous about repair costs and wondering if this is a common issue that can be fixed without replacing the entire sun blind mechanism. What was your experience at the repair shop?

Had the same sunshade repair issue on my 2010 Audi A6 3.0 TFSI. The UV protection sunblind stopped responding completely, showing an error code on the MMI display. The main problem was not the sun blind itself, but rather the motor and wiring harness that controls the interior accessory movement. A complete inspection revealed worn-out gears inside the motor housing plus corroded electrical connections. The repair required removing the rear deck to access the sunshade mechanism. This is actually a known issue with these models. The good news is that replacing just the motor assembly and electrical components fixes the problem, no need for a complete sunshade system replacement. The repair takes about 3-4 hours of labor since accessing the mechanism requires partial interior disassembly. The fix has lasted over 2 years now with no recurring issues. While not a major mechanical concern, its worth fixing since a stuck sunshade can lead to excessive heat buildup and potential damage to interior materials. Recommend getting it checked soon, as delayed repairs often result in additional wear to other components. The exact same symptoms you describe point to an identical issue. Best to have it diagnosed at a shop that regularly works on these models.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the rear sun blind repair. Mine is behaving exactly the same way. Can you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the motor and wiring replacement? Since the fix, have you noticed any other car sunshade related issues or does everything work smoothly now? My Audi A8 needs this sorted before summer hits as the UV protection is essential for the back seat passengers and leather interior.

Since fixing the defective sun blind motor at the shop, everything works perfectly, no more error codes or stuck mechanisms. The repair cost came to 330 Euro total, which covered both parts and labor to replace the motor assembly. The car blind system now operates smoothly without any problems. The UV protection is back to working as intended, which makes a huge difference for rear passengers and helps preserve the leather interior. The repair was definitely worth the investment, especially considering a complete sun blind replacement would have cost significantly more. Having a working interior accessory like this is crucial during summer months. The motor replacement resolved all issues, and I have not experienced any other sunshade-related problems in the past months. The mechanism moves up and down reliably every time. For the kind of protection it provides, the repair cost was reasonable. I would recommend getting it fixed soon to prevent any additional wear on the system components.

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses. I finally got my A8 fixed at the shop yesterday. The mechanic confirmed it was indeed the motor and wiring issue. Labor took about 4 hours since they had to remove quite a bit of the interior trim to access the mechanism. The total repair came to 380 Euro, slightly more than expected but the sun blind now works flawlessly. The error code is gone and the mechanism moves smoothly. They also cleaned and lubricated the entire track system while they were in there. Best part is they found the issue before it could damage other components or the window visor assembly itself. Really glad I got this sorted before summer, the UV protection is already making a noticeable difference for the back seats. No more worrying about sun damage to the leather either. For anyone else facing this issue, definitely worth getting it checked out sooner rather than later. The repair cost was way better than having to replace the complete system.
