Audi A8 Window Motor Fix: Cost and DIY Solutions

Looking for advice on my 2000 Audi A8 3.7L (186831km), power windows stopped working completely and the car shows an error code. The window regulator motor seems to be the culprit, but my last automotive repair experience left me skeptical. Has anyone dealt with similar window track issues on these models? Want to know what to expect at the shop and if there are common fixes worth checking before going to a mechanic. Also curious about typical repair costs for window motor replacement on these older A8s.

I had a similar power windows issue with my 2003 Audi A6 2.8L. The window control system failed completely, showing error codes on all doors. Initially thought it was just the window mechanism, but diagnostic testing revealed a failed master power window switch in the driver door module. The automotive repair required removing the door panel and replacing both the master switch unit and the wiring harness that connects to the window regulator. The window track itself was intact, but corrosion in the electrical connections had caused the system failure. This is actually a common issue in these Audi models from that era. The fix involves more than just replacing parts, proper diagnostic testing is essential because window control problems can stem from multiple components in the power window system. Before taking it to a shop, check your fuses and try resetting the window control module by disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes. However, given the age of your A8, its likely the issue requires professional intervention. The repair itself is not particularly complex for an experienced mechanic, but access to proper diagnostic equipment is crucial. This repair was serious enough to require a full day at the shop, mainly due to the time needed for proper diagnosis and testing after the fix.

Thanks for sharing those details about the window control repair on your A6. Dealing with something very similar on my A8 right now. The regulator motor and switch replacement fixed most issues, but I noticed the passenger window still acts up sometimes. Did you remember roughly what the repair cost in your case? And has everything worked smoothly since the window mechanism was fixed, or have you run into any other electrical gremlins with the windows?

The window control repair on my A6 was definitely worth it. After identifying the faulty window regulator and replacing the power window switch, everything has worked flawlessly for over a year now. The automotive repair shop charged 200 Euro for the complete fix, which included parts and labor. The window motor installation was straightforward once they properly diagnosed the issue. Unlike your A8s passenger window problem, I havent experienced any further electrical issues with the window track system. Seems the initial repair addressed all the underlying problems. If your passenger window is still acting up, it might be worth having the mechanic check the wiring connections specific to that door. Sometimes these older models can develop separate issues in individual window control units, even after the main system is fixed.

I took your advice and went to get my A8s power windows checked out. The mechanic found the window regulator was completely shot, plus some corroded wiring in the door panel that was causing the passenger side issues. Total bill came to 380 Euro, bit more than expected but they did a thorough job. The entire automotive repair took about 4 hours. They had to order a specific window control module, but once they got the parts, the fix went smoothly. The car window system works perfectly now, no more error codes or sticking issues. Best part is they showed me exactly what was wrong with the old components. The window track was actually fine, but the electrical connections were in terrible shape. Glad I got it sorted before winter hits.
