Audi Oil Pressure Warning After Recent Service Visit

My A4 from 2009 (129000km, gasoline) shows the oil pressure warning light and a warning in the instrument cluster. Last oil change was done at a mechanic 3 months ago but I am not sure if they used the right engine oil or if something else is wrong. Has anyone experienced similar issues with low oil pressure warnings? Could this be due to contaminated oil and what should I check first before taking it back to a shop?

Had a similar issue on my 2012 A5 2.0 TFSI. The oil pressure warning needs immediate attention as it can indicate serious engine problems. First check the engine oil level and color through the dipstick. If the oil looks dark and dirty despite recent change, or has metal particles, this could indicate internal engine wear. My case revealed contaminated engine oil due to wrong oil grade being used. The oil pressure warning can stem from: Using incorrect oil viscosity grade, Oil pump malfunction, Worn engine bearings, Clogged oil pickup tube, Failed oil pressure sensor In my case, the mechanic had used standard oil instead of the required synthetic engine oil meeting VW 502.00 spec. The oil degraded quickly, causing pressure drops. After proper oil change with correct specification oil and cleaning the oil system, the warning disappeared. Given the mileage, recommend checking: 1. Current oil level and condition 2. Oil filter condition 3. Documentation of what oil type was used 4. Oil pressure sensor readings with diagnostic tool This is a serious issue requiring professional diagnosis. Continuing to drive with low oil pressure can cause catastrophic engine damage.

Thanks for your detailed response about the oil pressure warning. I also dealt with oil contamination on my A4 2.0T that triggered similar warnings. Got it fixed but had to get the oil pickup tube cleaned as well since it was partially clogged. Just wondering, how much did the complete fix cost you in the end? Have you experienced any engine damage or related issues since getting it sorted? My total repair came close to 850 Euro but it was worth fixing right away before causing more serious problems. The oil color looked much better after the service and the warning never came back.

After taking it to my mechanic, they found that incorrect oil grade was indeed the main culprit causing the oil contamination. The total repair cost was 165 Euro which covered flushing the system and replacing with the correct synthetic engine oil. This was significantly less than expected since no major engine damage had occurred. The oil filter was also replaced as a precaution and they performed a thorough system cleaning to remove any oil contamination residue. Since fixing the maintenance interval issue three months ago, the engine has been running smoothly with proper oil pressure and no warning lights. Regular checks show clean, amber-colored engine oil now, which is exactly what you want to see. The lesson learned was to always verify the correct oil specification is being used, as using the wrong grade can lead to costly repairs if not caught early. The oil pressure warning hasnt returned since the service, confirming it was purely an oil grade compatibility issue rather than any internal engine problems.

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses. Just wanted to share how my situation got resolved in case others face similar issues. Took it to a different mechanic who diagnosed the problem properly. They found a combination of issues, wrong oil grade from the previous service and a partially blocked oil pickup tube causing the oil pressure warnings. The repair involved: Complete oil system flush, New synthetic oil meeting correct specs, Cleaning the oil pickup tube, New oil filter, Oil pressure sensor check Total cost came to 850 Euro which included labor. The engine runs much smoother now and the oil color looks normal when checked. Most importantly, no more warning lights in the last 2 weeks. Really glad I addressed this quickly instead of driving with the warning light on. The mechanic showed me how the old oil had started forming sludge deposits which could have led to serious engine damage if left unchecked. A costly lesson about making sure proper oil specifications are followed during servicing. Will definitely be more vigilant about this during future oil changes.
