Audi Q3 check engine light comes on repeatedly at certain intervals, possibly defective EGR valve?

Hi guys, my 2015 Audi Q3 Diesel, 218,765 km, is really worrying me right now. The Check Engine Light is on, the engine stalls by itself, makes hardly any power, runs rough, smells strongly from the exhaust and vibrates at idle. Do you think this could be due to the EGR valve? I also had a bad experience at the mechanic recently. Have you perhaps experienced similar symptoms and have a tip for a good mechanic? Many thanks!

Summary of the thread

The conversation revolves around a 2015 Audi Q3 experiencing issues such as the Check Engine Light turning on, engine stalling, lack of power, rough running, strong exhaust smell, and vibrations at idle. These symptoms suggest a potential problem with the EGR valve, which controls exhaust gas recirculation. A similar case with an Audi A4 was resolved by replacing the defective EGR valve and cleaning the engine area, leading to improved performance. Following this advice, the Audi Q3 owner had the EGR valve replaced, resulting in the car running smoothly again.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I had similar problems with my 2017 Audi A4. The engine was running rough, there was a strong smell and vibrations at idle, and it also stopped several times on its own. The mechanic said the EGR valve was defective or jammed. This is a serious matter, because the EGR valve controls the exhaust gas recirculation and if it doesn't work properly, it can lead to such symptoms. At my garage, they replaced the EGR valve and cleaned the engine area thoroughly. After that, the car ran perfectly again. So yes, the EGR valve could definitely be the cause of your problems. If you haven't done it yet, I would go to the garage and have the valve checked. Good luck and I hope your Q3 runs smoothly again soon! Greetings

Hey, thanks for your detailed reply! Do you happen to remember how much the repair cost? And have you had any problems since then or is everything working great? LG

Hey, sure, I can help you with that! After I went to the mechanic, the functional fault in the EGR valve was rectified. The cost of the repair was €355 for replacing and repairing the defective or jammed EGR valve. Since then, my Audi has been running great and I've had no further problems. It was definitely a worthwhile investment and I'm really glad I had it done. So, don't worry - I think this could be the solution for your Q3 too. Good luck and I hope your Q3 runs smoothly again soon! LG

Hey guys, thanks for all your tips and feedback! I've decided to go to the mechanic again, even though my last experience was really bad. And what can I say - it was actually the EGR valve! The mechanic replaced it and cleaned the engine area thoroughly. The whole thing wasn't cheap, it cost me around €355. But since then my Audi has been running like clockwork again, no more problems, no vibrations, no smell and the power is back. It was a really good decision to go back to the garage, even though I had my doubts at first. Thanks to everyone who has helped me with their experience and tips, especially on the subject of the EGR valve! Best regards,
