Thanks for sharing your experience. The thermostat and sensor replacement sounds exactly like what my Q3 needs. The symptoms match perfectly, especially the irregular thermal management behavior. Since sorting this out, have you noticed any other engine overheating issues or car cooling problems? Also, would you mind sharing what the repair cost was? Planning my budget for this fix and want to make sure Im prepared.

After getting the thermostat and sensor replaced, my A4s thermal management system has been working flawlessly. No more engine overheating or erratic temperature readings. The repair cost for the thermostat and sensor came to 52 Euro for the fuse replacement. The mechanic also found and fixed a restricted cooling grille, which was contributing to the cooling system issues. Since addressing these problems, the engine warms up normally and maintains consistent operating temperatures. Worth mentioning that fuel efficiency has improved and the engine runs much smoother now that the cooling system is functioning properly. The check engine light hasnt returned either, confirming the repair was successful. If your symptoms are similar, getting it fixed sooner rather than later will help prevent any potential long-term engine damage. The repair was straightforward and definitely worth the investment for proper engine performance.

Thanks for the helpful advice. Took my Q3 to a different mechanic this time who actually knew what they were doing. Turned out the thermostat and sensor were indeed the culprits, just as suggested. The repair was quick, about 3 hours total. Ended up costing 380 Euro for parts and labor. They also cleaned out some debris affecting the automotive cooling system while they were at it. The car is running so much better now. No more erratic temperature gauge behavior and the engine warms up normally. Check engine light is finally off and staying off. Fuel economy has improved too, which is a nice bonus. Definitely glad I got this fixed before it led to any serious engine overheating issues. Having a properly functioning cooling system makes such a difference in how the car runs. Really appreciate all the input that helped point me in the right direction.

Had similar symptoms with my Audi A4 2016. The erratic temperature gauge behavior and slow warm-up pointed to a faulty thermostat and temperature sensor combination. The check engine light was triggered by incorrect temperature readings. Initially suspected a radiator blockage or cooling grille malfunction, but diagnostic testing revealed the thermostat was stuck open, preventing proper engine cooling regulation. The temperature sensor was also sending incorrect signals to the ECU. The repair involved replacing both components as they work together in the engine cooling system. While not a catastrophic issue if addressed promptly, running with a faulty thermostat can lead to poor fuel economy and potential engine wear. Key warning signs that matched your situation: Inconsistent temperature gauge readings, Extended warm-up periods, Check engine light activation, Irregular engine cooling performance Consider having a professional check the thermostat and temperature sensor before exploring more complex cooling system issues. The diagnostic codes should point directly to these components if they are indeed the problem.
