Audi Q5 Belt Tensioner Squeal: Fix Tips & Costs

Looking for advice on a belt tensioner issue with my 2009 Q5 (2.0 gasoline, 182k km). The belt drive makes a constant squealing noise and the tensioner pulley seems loose. Had some poor experiences with mechanics lately and want to make sure I get this fixed properly. Has anyone dealt with similar belt squeal problems on this engine? What was the repair cost and did you need to replace other components besides the tensioner?

A faulty tensioner pulley caused similar serpentine belt issues on my 2012 Audi A4 2.0T. The engine noise started as an intermittent squeal, particularly noticeable during cold starts, before becoming constant. The automobile maintenance revealed the tensioner had completely failed, allowing excess belt movement. When the pulley bearing wears out, it creates belt misalignment and affects engine performance across multiple systems since the serpentine belt drives several components. The repair required: New tensioner assembly, New serpentine belt, Inspection of all related pulleys, Belt alignment check This was a serious issue requiring immediate attention, as a failed tensioner can cause the belt to snap or come off entirely, leaving you stranded and potentially causing engine damage. The repair took about 2 hours at the shop. Watch out for any additional symptoms like belt fraying, unusual pulley movement, or changes in engine noise pitch. Having all components checked during repair is crucial since worn parts can cause premature failure of the new tensioner.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the tensioner issue. Your symptoms sound exactly like what I am dealing with right now. The constant belt squeal is driving me crazy, especially knowing it could lead to bigger problems. Really helpful to know about checking all the related components. Did you remember roughly how much the whole repair ended up costing? Also curious if you have had any idler pulley or belt drive issues since getting it fixed? Would be great to know if I should budget for additional repairs beyond just the tensioner replacement.

Had the tensioner repair done last month and can confirm it completely resolved the belt squeal. A thorough engine performance check showed no other issues were present. The automobile maintenance cost breakdown was 455 Euro for the belt tensioner replacement, which included labor and parts. The repair shop did a complete inspection of the entire belt drive system including the tensioner pulley and other components. They confirmed no additional repairs were needed. Since fixing the bad belt tensioner, the engine has run smoothly with no noise or performance issues. For proper preventive maintenance, they recommended checking the belt tension every 30000km to avoid premature wear. Regular inspections help catch potential problems before they affect other engine components or leave you stranded. No issues with the idler pulley or any other belt drive components since the repair. The investment in quality parts and proper installation seems to have addressed the root cause completely.

Thanks for the input. I finally got the tensioner issue fixed last week and wanted to share my experience. The timing belt squeal was indeed caused by a failing tensioner pulley, just as suggested. Found a reliable mechanic who did a complete belt drive inspection. The total repair came to 480 Euro including: New tensioner assembly, Fresh serpentine belt, Labor costs, Full system check The engine noise disappeared completely after the fix. Engine performance is notably better now, especially during startup. The mechanic also spotted slight wear on the idler pulley but said it still had plenty of life left. The repair took about 2.5 hours total. No more annoying belt squeal and everything runs smoothly now. Really glad I got this addressed before it caused bigger problems. For anyone else facing similar issues, getting a thorough inspection of the entire belt system is definitely worth it. The peace of mind knowing everything is properly fixed is worth the investment.
