Audi Q7 Hybrid Misfires Point to Failing Coil Packs

Looking for help with my 2019 Audi Q7 Hybrid that started acting up recently. Engine runs rough, stalls at idle, and jerks during acceleration. The check engine light is also on. I suspect a coil failure might be the issue since these symptoms match what I read about faulty ignition coils. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their Q7? Really interested in hearing about your diagnostic process and repair experience, particularly if it turned out to be a coil pack problem. Did replacing the coils fix it, or was it something else entirely? Any tips on narrowing down which coil might be failing? Also wondering about typical repair costs if anyone has had this fixed recently.

Had similar issues with my 2017 Audi Q5 Hybrid last winter. Have some experience working on cars, mainly doing basic maintenance and troubleshooting. Your symptoms sound exactly like what I experienced, rough running, stalling, and jerking during acceleration. The check engine light was definitely a wake-up call. The ignition system problems turned out to be caused by a loose connection at one of the coil packs. Took it to my regular workshop where they diagnosed it as a cable connection issue affecting the ignition coil. The fix was relatively straightforward, they had to repair and secure the wiring connection to the coil pack. Total cost was 95 Euro including diagnostic time. Before spending money on replacing coils, definitely get the connections checked first. A loose or corroded connection can mimic coil failure symptoms perfectly. To help diagnose your specific case, could you share: Any error codes from the check engine light? Does the rough running happen more at certain RPMs? Have you noticed any moisture-related issues, since water intrusion can cause connection problems? When was your last ignition system service? With this info, I might be able to point you in a more specific direction.

Thanks for the helpful insight. Since my last service at 120000km, these issues started occurring more frequently. After reading your response, I checked and pulled the error code P0301, which points to cylinder 1 misfire. The rough running mainly happens at low RPMs and idle. I noticed the engine stalling is worse when the engine is cold, especially in the morning. The problem seems less severe once the engine warms up, but the misfire is still noticeable during acceleration. I also had the ignition coils inspected during my last service about 4 months ago, and everything appeared normal then. No signs of moisture damage or corrosion around the ignition system components when I looked under the hood.

Thanks for the additional details. Your P0301 code and symptoms strongly suggest an ignition system issue, likely related to cylinder 1. In my Q5, I initially thought it was just connection issues, but after further diagnosis, I ended up replacing both the ignition coil and spark plug for that cylinder. The cold start problems and rough idle are classic signs of coil pack failure. When I replaced the coil and plug, it completely resolved similar issues in my car. The morning stalling you mentioned matches exactly what I experienced, the failing coil struggled most when cold. Given your mileage and that the symptoms persist after warmup, I recommend replacing at least the cylinder 1 coil pack and spark plug. When my coil failed, I learned it's often worth doing all plugs at that mileage point anyway. The complete job cost me around 280 Euro including parts and labor. Quick tip: If your engine is running rough right now, try swapping the coil from cylinder 1 with another cylinder. If the misfire code moves to the new cylinder, you've confirmed the coil is the culprit. This troubleshooting step saved me from replacing parts unnecessarily. Would you like information about compatible coil pack part numbers or tips for testing the other cylinders?

The vehicle diagnostics and error code information you provided really helps narrow things down. I will have my car checked tomorrow, and I plan to try the coil swap test you suggested to confirm if it's definitely a faulty coil causing the engine hesitation and misfire. Based on how similar your experience sounds, especially with the cold start issues and check engine light warnings, I think I'm dealing with the same ignition system problem. The fact that my symptoms match yours, particularly the rough running improving after warmup but still having issues during acceleration, makes me more confident about focusing on the coil pack replacement. 280 Euro for parts and labor sounds reasonable compared to what I was worried it might cost. Would definitely appreciate the part numbers for compatible coil packs when you have a chance. I might also take your advice and replace all the spark plugs while I'm at it, given the mileage. Will update once I get it diagnosed and repaired. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's given me a much clearer direction on how to address this issue.
