Audi RS4 Electronic Handbrake Failure Fix Guide

Having trouble with my 2014 Audi RS4 (68098KM, gas engine). The electronic handbrake stopped working completely and a warning light appeared on the dash. Already got an error code read out but mechanic wants to charge a lot for brake diagnostics. Has anyone experienced similar electronic brake issues with their RS4? Looking for advice on typical causes and reasonable repair costs before I commit to this repair shop.

Had similar brake control issues with my 2011 Audi S4. The electronic parking brake system showed multiple fault codes and warning lights. The main problem was the electric motor in the brake caliper, a common failure point in these systems. The repair required replacing both rear brake caliper motors as they work as a pair for vehicle safety. This was not a DIY job due to the need for special diagnostic tools and proper brake system calibration after replacement. This brake failure needs immediate attention, as it affects both parking and emergency brake functions. The system glitch can sometimes be temporary, but in most cases, its a hardware issue requiring caliper motor replacement. When the brake fault appeared on my S4, driving was still possible, but the car would occasionally show errors when parking. The repair shop needed specialized Audi diagnostic equipment to properly reset the system after parts replacement. Worth noting this is a known issue affecting multiple VAG models from that era. While expensive, its essential to have it fixed at a shop with proper diagnostic capabilities to ensure complete brake system functionality.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My caliper motors also failed about 6 months ago on my RS4. The parking brake warning kept coming on and off out of nowhere before complete brake failure. A proper diagnosis showed both motors needed replacement. The brake switch and control module were actually fine in my case. Just wondering, do you remember roughly what you paid for the full repair? My bill seemed steep but maybe thats standard for these parking brake issues. Also, has everything worked perfectly since the fix or have you noticed any other brake-related problems?

Thanks for asking about the costs. Just got the repair done last week actually, total bill came to 505 Euro for fixing the electronic parking brake malfunction. The brake diagnostics confirmed it was indeed the electric motor in the brake caliper that was defective. Since the repair, the parking brake system has worked flawlessly with no warning lights or system glitches. The unusual brake switch warnings completely disappeared after the fix. Pretty relieved since these brake failure issues can be quite concerning when they first show up. The repair costs can seem high, but its crucial for safety and properly functioning parking brake systems. From what I understand, the specialized tools and expertise needed for brake diagnostics and calibration account for a good portion of the repair costs. Good to hear your control module was fine, that would have added significantly to the repair bill. The caliper motor replacement alone is typically enough to resolve these electronic parking brake problems completely.

Thanks for the feedback. Finally got my RS4 back from the shop yesterday. The repair cost was 780 Euro total, pretty steep but the brake diagnostics showed both caliper motors needed replacement. Took them about 4 hours to complete the work. The mechanic walked me through the whole brake failure issue and showed me the worn components. While checking the system they also found a faulty brake sensor which explained the unusual warning lights. Decided to replace that too since they were already working on the brake system. After 2 days of driving, the electronic parking brake works perfectly now. No more warning lights or strange noises. The brake switch engages smoothly every time. Really glad I got it fixed properly rather than trying cheaper alternatives that might compromise vehicle safety. Hope this helps others facing similar electronic parking brake issues. Worth paying for proper brake diagnostics to get it fixed right the first time.
