Thanks for sharing your experience with the fuel system problem. It sounds exactly like what I am dealing with right now. Your automotive diagnosis approach makes total sense. I checked and there is indeed a faint whining noise coming from the tank area. Did you remember the total repair cost in your case? Also curious if you had any recurring issues since the wiring harness replacement or if it completely resolved the gasoline delivery problems?

Good news, since having the mechanic check my S6, the fuel pump issue was fully resolved. Like your case, the automotive diagnosis pointed to inconsistent gasoline delivery, but the actual problem was much simpler than expected. The repair only cost 95 Euro to fix a faulty cable connection at the pump assembly. Car performance has been perfect since the repair six months ago, with no recurring fuel system problems. The whining noise disappeared completely, idle smoothed out, and fuel consumption returned to normal levels. This confirms the gasoline delivery issues were solely due to the poor electrical connection rather than pump failure. Given your similar symptoms, especially the whining sound from the tank area, I would recommend having the electrical connections checked first before replacing the entire pump assembly. A proper diagnosis could save significant repair costs if you have the same underlying issue.

Thanks for the helpful advice. I took my RS6 to a different mechanic who specializes in fuel system diagnostics. The automotive diagnosis revealed exactly what was suggested, a damaged wiring harness causing irregular gasoline delivery. The repair cost came to 180 Euro for parts and labor. The mechanic showed me the corroded wiring connections which were causing the fuel pump to receive inconsistent power. Once replaced, the engine stalling and rough running completely disappeared. Car performance is back to normal and fuel consumption has returned to expected levels. The whole process took about 3 hours and I really appreciate the mechanic walking me through what they found. No more whining noise from the tank area either. Glad I got a second opinion instead of replacing the entire pump assembly which would have cost much more without fixing the real issue.

After experiencing similar symptoms on my 2017 Audi S6, I can confirm these signs often indicate fuel delivery problems. The auto repair process revealed two potential causes: either a failing fuel pump or compromised electrical connections to the pump assembly. The rough running and engine stalling at idle are classic symptoms of inconsistent gasoline delivery. In my case, the pump itself was fine, but the wiring harness connecting to the fuel pump had deteriorated, causing intermittent connection issues. The repair involved: Testing fuel pressure at the rail, Checking electrical connectivity at the pump, Replacing the wiring harness and connectors, Clearing the engine control module codes Car performance returned to normal after fixing the electrical connections. While not as costly as replacing the entire pump assembly, this was still a serious repair requiring special diagnostic equipment and expertise. The increased fuel consumption you mentioned matches what I experienced, the system was compensating for irregular fuel pressure by running rich. If you notice any whining sounds from the rear of the car, this could confirm pump-related issues. Having these symptoms properly diagnosed with a fuel pressure test is essential before replacing parts.
