Audi S1 MAF Sensor Issues Causing Multiple Problems

Thanks for the detailed response. My S1 has 184090 KM on the clock and just had its annual service last month where they changed the air filter. I ran a diagnostic scan yesterday and got the P0101 code, which confirms the mass air flow sensor issue. The intake system is completely stock, no modifications at all. The 365 Euro repair cost seems reasonable if it includes a full air intake cleaning. Will probably book it in next week since the stalling is getting worse and the poor fuel economy is really hitting the wallet.

Thanks for the additional details. With that mileage and the P0101 code, your symptoms match my experience exactly. In my case, I also waited a bit before getting it fixed, which was a mistake since the poor air-fuel ratio started affecting overall engine performance. The full air intake cleaning made a noticeable difference for long-term sensor performance. My mass air flow sensor has been working flawlessly since the replacement, and fuel economy returned to normal within two tanks of fuel. One tip from my experience: request them to check the wiring harness connected to the sensor while they are doing the work. In my case, they found some minor corrosion on the connections which they cleaned up at no extra cost. This helps prevent false readings from the new sensor. I would definitely get it fixed sooner rather than later. The constant stalling and rich fuel mixture can potentially cause other issues if left unchecked. After my repair, the check engine light never came back, and the engine idle smoothed out completely. The workshop also mentioned that regular intake cleaning every 50000 KM helps prevent premature sensor failure. Might be worth keeping that in mind for future maintenance.

Thanks for all the information. That matches my case almost perfectly. I booked an appointment for next Tuesday and made sure to mention the P0101 code and MAF sensor issue. Also asked them to check the wiring harness based on your experience. Really helpful to know the sensor replacement fixed all your symptoms. The stalling has become a real safety concern, especially at traffic lights, so I cannot wait to get this sorted. Good point about not delaying, I will stop driving it until the repair to prevent any additional engine issues from the poor air-fuel ratio. I will make a note about the 50000 KM intake cleaning schedule. Makes sense to be proactive about maintenance, especially since the car is approaching 200000 KM. Thanks again for sharing your experience and the repair costs, gives me confidence I am making the right call getting this fixed next week.

Had the exact same symptoms on my 2013 Audi A1 about six months ago. Having worked on basic car maintenance, I knew enough to recognize the air-fuel ratio issues but needed professional help for this repair. The black smoke during acceleration and poor fuel economy were the first signs. The performance decline was noticeable, especially during cold starts. My check engine light came on shortly after. Took it to a workshop where they confirmed the mass air flow sensor failure through diagnostic testing. The total repair came to 365 Euro, which included the new sensor and labor. They cleaned the entire air intake system while they were at it, which helped prevent future issues. The fix completely resolved all symptoms, no more stalling, better fuel economy, and the check engine light cleared up. The engine ran much smoother after the repair. Before suggesting specific solutions, could you share: Current mileage on your S1? When was your last air filter change? Have you scanned for specific error codes? Any modifications to the intake system? This information would help determine if your situation matches what I experienced and whether you might need additional checks beyond the sensor replacement.
