Audi S1 Timing Issues Cause Power Loss and Rough Idle

I had a very similar issue with my 2012 Audi S3. As someone with some experience working on cars, I first thought it was timing belt related, but it turned out the crank sensor was failing, causing misfire issues and timing problems. The symptoms matched yours exactly, rough running, power loss, increased fuel consumption, and check engine light. The faulty crank sensor was sending incorrect reference values to the ECU, which caused the engine timing to be off. My workshop diagnosed it with their diagnostic tool, confirming the crank sensor was sending erratic signals. The repair took about 2 hours and cost 340 Euro including parts and labor. Since the fix, the engine runs perfectly again. Before suggesting specific solutions, could you share: Current mileage on your S1, Whether you have any stored error codes, If the check engine light flashes or stays constant, When was the last timing belt service done, If the symptoms appeared suddenly or gradually This information would help determine if your issue is indeed similar to what I experienced with my crank sensor problem or if it might be related to the camshaft timing or other components.

Last service was at 84254 KM and the engine error code shows P0016. I forgot to mention in my initial post that the check engine light started flashing intermittently before staying on permanently. The symptoms developed over about a week. The timing belt was replaced at 60000 KM. I should also mention that I hear a slight ticking noise from the engine, which seems to get louder when accelerating. Thanks for sharing your experience with the crank sensor issue, the symptoms do sound very similar. I will have my workshop check the engine synchronization and crankshaft sensor based on your feedback.

Having experienced this exact issue with my S3, the P0016 code combined with your symptoms strongly points to a crankshaft-camshaft timing correlation issue. The ticking noise you mention is particularly concerning, as I heard similar noises before my diagnosis. While my initial crank sensor diagnosis was correct, your P0016 code specifically indicates a timing problem between the crankshaft position and the camshaft position. Since your timing belt was replaced at 60000 KM, the issue might be with the timing chain tensioner, which can cause engine synchronization problems. In my case, after the crank sensor replacement, the symptoms briefly improved but returned. Further diagnosis revealed a worn timing chain tensioner affecting the camshaft timing. The complete repair included: Timing chain tensioner replacement, New crankshaft position sensor, Engine timing reset and synchronization check Total repair cost was around 890 Euro, significantly more than just the sensor replacement, but solved the misfire issues and restored proper engine performance completely. Given your identical symptoms and error code, I strongly recommend having both components checked. The progressive nature of your symptoms matches my experience exactly.

Thanks for your detailed reply. After hearing about your similar experience, I feel more confident about what might be wrong with my S1. The matching symptoms, especially the P0016 code and that ticking noise, really help narrow it down. I will definitely have my workshop check both the timing chain tensioner and the crank sensor during their diagnosis. I will schedule an appointment right away since I want to prevent any potential engine damage. The repair cost you mentioned around 890 Euro gives me a good reference point for what to expect. Good to know that fixing both components solved the misfire issues completely in your case. Will update once I get the diagnosis and repair done. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped point me in the right direction with the crankshaft-camshaft timing correlation problem.
