Audi S3 Failed Temp Sensor Causes Power Loss Issues

My check engine light recently came on in my 2021 Audi S3 (180422 KM, gas engine) and the car is running really rough with reduced power. Car diagnostics shows it might be the air temperature sensor acting up. Has anyone dealt with this before? How much did the repair cost and was it a straightforward fix? After a bad experience with my last mechanic, I want to be better prepared this time.

Had the same issue last month with my 2018 Audi RS3. The IAT sensor malfunction caused similar symptoms, rough running and power loss. The diagnostic tool confirmed the temperature sensor was sending incorrect temperature readings to the ECU. The intake air temperature sensor sits in the air intake system and measures incoming air temperature. When it fails, the engine management system receives wrong data, leading to incorrect fuel mixture calculations. The repair process was straightforward for an experienced mechanic: accessing the sensor location, disconnecting the electrical connector, removing the old sensor, and installing a new one. The car sensor needed recalibration after replacement to ensure proper communication with the ECU. This was not a serious mechanical issue, more of an electronic component failure. The repair took about an hour. Most important was using a genuine replacement part to avoid future problems. After the fix, the check engine light cleared and engine performance returned to normal. Would recommend having this addressed soon as continued driving with faulty temperature readings can affect fuel efficiency and engine performance.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My S3 is now running perfectly after the IAT sensor replacement, no more rough running or power issues. The car diagnostics show everything is back to normal. Been meaning to ask, do you remember roughly what you paid for the fix? And has everything stayed problem-free since the repair? Just wondering if I should keep an eye out for any related issues.

Great to hear your S3 is running smoothly again. The repair for my RS3 cost me 155 Euro in total, which covered both the IAT sensor replacement and labor. That price was pretty reasonable considering how the faulty intake air temperature sensor was affecting overall performance. Since getting it fixed, my car has been running flawlessly, no engine issues or warning lights. The air sensor replacement completely resolved the rough running and power problems. Just make sure your mechanic used genuine parts, as aftermarket sensors can sometimes cause reliability issues down the line. For preventive maintenance, I recommend having the air intake system checked during regular servicing. This helps catch any potential sensor problems before they trigger check engine lights or performance issues.

Thanks everyone for the helpful info. I took my S3 to a certified shop last week and the total repair came to 180 Euro. The mechanic showed me the old IAT sensor which was completely gunked up. The diagnostic tool readings are now spot on and the temperature sensor is working perfectly. No more check engine light or power issues. The mechanic was really thorough, explaining everything and even showing me the before/after temperature readings on their diagnostics screen. The whole repair only took about 45 minutes. Much better experience than my last mechanic who tried charging double without explaining anything. Car runs like new now, responsive and smooth. Definitely worth getting it fixed right away rather than risking more problems.
