Audi S3 Transmission Failure Linked to Cooling Issues

My 2003 Audi S3 automatic transmission is acting up with multiple symptoms pointing to potential cooling system issues. The transmission shifts poorly, makes grinding noises, and goes into limp mode. Both check engine and transmission warning lights are on. The radiator oil pressure seems problematic, and the car shows transmission-related error codes. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms and had them fixed? Particularly interested in whether it was indeed a cooling system issue and what exactly needed replacement. The transmission fluid temperature seems unusually high when these problems occur. Looking for repair insights before heading to a workshop.

I had a similar issue with my 2001 Audi S4, also with automatic transmission. Having some experience with transmission cooling problems, I can relate to these symptoms. The pressure sensor readings and high transmission fluid temperature were key indicators in my case. After using a pressure gauge to confirm the readings, my workshop found that the transmission oil cooler had developed a small leak, causing insufficient cooling and pressure loss. In my case, the root cause was a faulty cable connection at the transmission control unit, which led to incorrect readings and transmission behavior. The workshop performed leak detection tests to confirm there were no actual cooling system issues. The repair involved replacing the damaged wiring and connector, costing 95 Euro for parts and labor. Your symptoms sound very similar, but to provide more specific advice, could you share: Current transmission fluid level and condition, Exact error codes showing up, When the symptoms first appeared, Whether the issues happen more during long drives or city traffic, If the car overheating warning ever comes on This information would help determine if youre facing the same electrical issue or if theres an actual mechanical problem with the cooling system components.

Latest service completed at 134559KM, and I wanted to provide an update on my transmission cooling issue. After getting the car checked, the pressure gauge readings confirmed low pressure in the transmission cooling circuit. The technician found metal particles in the transmission fluid, suggesting internal wear. The oil cooler showed signs of clogging, which explains the car overheating issues during longer drives. The pressure sensor was also malfunctioning, giving false readings to the transmission control unit. This caused the erratic shifting behavior and limp mode activation. The repair quote includes: Transmission fluid flush: 180 Euro, New oil cooler: 420 Euro, Pressure sensor replacement: 150 Euro, Labor: 350 Euro Before proceeding with repairs, wanted to check if these costs seem reasonable and if anyone recommends additional preventive maintenance while the cooling system is being serviced?

Having dealt with similar transmission cooling issues on my Audi S4, I think those repair costs align with what I experienced. The presence of metal particles is concerning though, as this indicates more wear than I initially had in my case. The quoted 1100 Euro total seems fair considering the comprehensive work needed. When my transmission had cooling problems, I learned that addressing the radiator coolant and oil cooler issues early prevents more expensive transmission damage. Given your symptoms and findings, I recommend also: Having them perform a thorough radiator repair and leak detection test on the entire cooling system (around 150 Euro extra), Replacing the transmission filter while the fluid is being changed, Getting the transmission control unit software checked for updates The metal particles suggest your transmission may have sustained more damage than mine did due to the car overheating issues. My repair costs were lower because we caught it before internal wear occurred. What error codes is the car showing now? This could indicate if there might be additional transmission components affected by the prolonged cooling system problems.

Thanks for all the feedback. After getting multiple opinions, I decided to go ahead with the full repair package, including the additional cooling system inspection you suggested. The error codes currently showing are P0218 (Transmission Fluid Over Temperature) and P0748 (Pressure Control Solenoid Electrical). The cooling fan also seems to run more frequently than normal, which makes sense given the overheating issues. I scheduled the repairs for next week and added the transmission filter replacement to the service list. The total cost increased to 1295 Euro with the additional checks and parts, but it seems worth it to prevent further damage. The workshop also mentioned theyll check the transmission control unit programming as part of the service. One final question, should I avoid driving the car until the repair, or is it safe for short trips if I monitor the transmission temperature and avoid heavy loads?
