Audi S4 Auto-Leveling Headlight System Failure Fix

Got a concerning headlight malfunction on my 2019 Audi S4 (30051km, gas). The low beam keeps adjusting incorrectly, pointing too high or too low while driving. There is a warning light on the dash and stored error code related to the range control. Has anyone experienced similar issues with their lighting system? Looking for advice on whether this is typically an expensive repair and if there are common causes before heading to the shop. Last mechanic visit was not great, so trying to be better prepared this time.

Had the same headlight malfunction on my 2016 Audi S5. The auto-leveling system was malfunctioning due to a defective servomotor in the headlight assembly. The control module was detecting incorrect positioning, causing the beams to adjust out of nowhere. The headlight switch and wiring were fine, but the servomotor had seized. This is a known issue with these lighting systems. The repair required replacing the complete headlight unit since the servomotor is integrated. Not a DIY job due to the calibration needed after installation. The shop had to use diagnostic equipment to properly initialize the new headlight and clear the system errors. This is considered a serious issue since it affects night driving safety and can blind oncoming traffic. The auto-leveling feature is also legally required to work properly on these models equipped with xenon or LED headlights. Best to have it checked soon, as continuing to drive with a malfunctioning leveling system can lead to additional strain on other headlight components. When booking the appointment, specifically mention the leveling issue and error codes to help the shop prepare.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the headlight issue. That matches exactly what happened with my adaptive headlights, the light intensity would out of nowhere change and the range control system kept failing. Had this fixed about 8 months ago and everything works perfectly since. The electrical connectors were all good but they found the control module was faulty. Shop also had to recalibrate the whole system after replacing parts. Would you mind sharing what the total repair cost was in your case? Just curious how it compares since I paid quite a bit for mine, though prices seem to vary a lot. Has everything stayed working properly for you since the repair?

Just got the repair done last week, great timing on your question. The headlight range control fault is completely fixed now. The shop found a defective servomotor in the headlight unit which was causing the adaptive headlights to malfunction. Total cost came to 1040 Euro including parts, labor and the essential recalibration of the lighting system. The control module is working perfectly now with no more unusual adjustments or warning lights. The auto-leveling feature maintains proper beam height and the entire lighting system functions as designed. Really worth getting it done properly by a qualified shop since they had all the right diagnostic equipment to ensure everything was properly initialized. The repair cost seems in line with what others have paid, considering the complexity of these modern lighting systems. When dealing with integrated headlight components and control modules, the parts alone make up a significant portion of the bill.

Thanks for the feedback. Wanted to share my repair experience since others might find it helpful. The headlight malfunction turned out to be exactly the range control issue mentioned. Took it to a certified shop last week. The diagnostic confirmed a faulty control module causing the auto-leveling system to act up. Total repair came to 980 Euro including parts, labor and system recalibration. Bit expensive but the lighting system works flawlessly now, no more unusual adjustments or warning lights. The headlight switch and all connections checked out fine. Main problem was the control module itself which they replaced and properly calibrated. Shop had the right diagnostic tools and knew exactly what to look for based on the error codes. Really glad I got it fixed properly instead of trying cheaper alternatives. Safe night driving is worth the investment. Plus the warning light was driving me crazy.
