Audi S4 Washer Spray Failure: DIY Diagnosis Guide

Looking for input on windshield washer problems in my Audi S4 (2004, gas, 59k km). System stopped working completely and threw an error code. Already checked the washer fluid level which seems fine. Has anyone encountered similar issues with the spray jets or washer motor? Want to avoid getting ripped off at the mechanic again after my last experience. Any suggestions on what to check before taking it in?

Had the same issue on my 2007 Audi A4 2.0T. The washer fluid warning light kept coming on despite having a full reservoir. After inspection, the problem turned out to be a faulty wiper fluid sensor combined with partially clogged spray nozzles. The washer fluid level sensor can give false readings when it gets corroded or covered in mineral deposits. This makes the system think the reservoir is empty even when its full. The spray nozzles also get blocked over time from mineral buildup in washer fluid. Quick checks you can do: Listen for pump sound when activating washers, Check if fluid comes out of all nozzles, Look for visible cracks in fluid lines, Clean nozzles with a pin This was not a serious repair in my case. The sensor needed replacement and nozzles required cleaning. Most common issue on these models is either the sensor or pump motor failing. Would recommend having it diagnosed properly since driving with limited visibility due to a dirty windshield can be dangerous. Keep in mind the dashboard light might stay on until the system is properly reset after repairs. Regular use of quality washer fluid helps prevent these issues.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the windshield cleaning system. The sensor and nozzle cleaning fix sounds like it was pretty straightforward. The wiper system on my S4 started working again after similar repairs, though I also had to replace the washer motor which was completely dead. Just wondering, do you remember roughly what your total repair cost was? Also, has everything been working properly since the fix or have you noticed any other issues with the washer fluid system?

After getting it fixed at the shop, my washer fluid system has been working perfectly with no more warning lights on the dashboard. The total repair came to 25 Euro which covered diagnosing and fixing the low washer fluid level sensor, plus cleaning out those clogged nozzles. The windshield washer system has been functioning flawlessly since the repair six months ago. No recurring issues with false low fluid warnings or spray problems. Regular maintenance with quality washer fluid seems to be keeping everything running smoothly. Much cheaper fix than I initially feared when the dashboard light first appeared. Glad to hear you got your S4 system working again too, even though you needed that additional washer motor replacement. These washer fluid system problems are pretty common on these models but usually straightforward to resolve once properly diagnosed.

I took it to my regular mechanic last week and the total cost ended up being 280 Euro since the washer motor needed replacement. The spray jets are working perfectly now and the dashboard light finally cleared. Much better than dealing with a dirty windshield and constant warning lights. The mechanic showed me the old motor which was completely corroded, apparently using poor quality washer fluid over time can contribute to these issues. Going to stick with proper winter-grade fluid from now on to avoid future problems. Pretty happy with how it turned out overall. The repair was more expensive than just a sensor issue, but at least I know what caused the problem and how to prevent it going forward. Good to have proper windshield cleaning function back, especially for highway driving.
