Audi S5 Power Steering Failure Warning Signs & Solutions

My Audi S5 2010 has developed a concerning steering issue. The steering wheel vibrates noticeably, and the handling feels very spongy. The electric steering system seems to be failing as it requires much more effort to turn the wheel than usual. The car also shows a steering-related error code. Has anyone encountered similar symptoms with their S5? The power steering appears to be the culprit, but I would appreciate insights from those who have dealt with this before. What was the root cause in your case, and what repairs were needed to resolve it? Any information about repair costs would be helpful too. Looking for real experiences, especially regarding the steering rack replacement or pressure hose issues, if those were involved in your repairs.

I faced a similar issue with my Audi S4 2012. With some experience working on Audis, I can share my firsthand experience with steering system problems. The symptoms you describe match what I encountered, vibrating steering wheel and increasingly difficult steering. After inspection, my workshop found the root cause was a faulty cable connection to the steering pump sensor. The hydraulic fluid levels were fine, but the electrical signals werent being properly transmitted through the steering system. The fix involved replacing the damaged wiring and connector to the sensor. Total cost was 95 Euro for parts and labor. The steering wheel returned to normal operation immediately after the repair. However, your symptoms could indicate different underlying issues since steering problems can have multiple causes. To provide more specific guidance, could you share: Current mileage on your S5, When the symptoms first appeared, Whether the steering feels different at various speeds, If the pressure hose shows any signs of leaking, The specific error code showing up This information would help determine if you are dealing with an electrical issue like mine or potentially a more serious mechanical problem with the steering pump or rack.

Last service was at 118357 KM and the steering system inspection showed no leaks in the pressure hose. After testing with another Audi technician, we discovered that both the wheel alignment and power steering pump were working fine. The issue was traced to a failing steering column sensor. The electronic power steering module was getting incorrect position data, causing inconsistent assist levels. The repair cost came to 450 Euro for the sensor replacement and recalibration. Since the fix, the steering wheel operates smoothly again with no vibration or error codes. This seems to be a known weak point in these models. Preventive inspection of the steering column during regular maintenance could help catch early warning signs before complete failure occurs.

Thanks for the detailed follow-up on your S5 steering issue. Your experience with the steering column sensor matches what I found with my S4, these electrical components can be tricky to diagnose initially. Looking back, I should have checked the steering column sensor first before diving into the pump sensor wiring. The power steering system on these models relies heavily on accurate sensor data. When the steering column sensor starts failing, it definitely creates those inconsistent assist levels you mentioned. The 450 Euro repair cost sounds about right, these electronic steering components tend to be expensive due to the precise calibration required. The preventive maintenance tip is spot-on. Regular inspection of both mechanical and electronic steering components helps catch these issues early. In my case, I now have my steering column and power steering system thoroughly checked during each major service interval. One thing worth mentioning, after my initial wiring repair, I also had the wheel alignment checked as a precaution. Even with the sensor issue fixed, proper alignment ensures the electric steering system works efficiently and prevents uneven tire wear.

Thank you for sharing those insights. Now that my S5 is fixed, I can add some context that might help others with similar steering system problems. The wheel alignment check was definitely worth doing even though it wasnt the root cause. What confused me initially was how the electric steering would work fine some days but act up on others. The failing steering column sensor created inconsistent behavior that mimicked multiple issues. For anyone else facing similar symptoms, make sure to: Get the specific error codes read, Have the steering column sensor checked early in the diagnosis, Request a full steering system inspection, Verify wheel alignment after repairs The 450 Euro repair was more expensive than I hoped, but much better than replacing the entire power steering pump or rack. The steering has been perfect for 5000 KM since the fix. Really appreciate everyone sharing their expertise here. This kind of specific technical knowledge helps save both time and money when dealing with complex steering system issues.
