Audi S8 Complete Audio Death: All Sources Silent

My Audi S8 2006 has gone completely silent, no sound from speakers at all. Car runs fine otherwise. Radio silence persists whether using radio, Bluetooth, or auxiliary input. No error messages showing up on the display. Looking for advice before going back to a mechanic since my last repair experience was not great. Anyone dealt with similar audio system issues on their S8? Running details: 53563 km on the clock, petrol engine.

Had the same audio connectivity issue on my 2009 Audi A8 4.2 FSI. The complete radio silence across all audio sources pointed to the amplifier, which is a common failure point in these models. The amp is located under the front passenger seat and can fail due to moisture damage or electronic component wear. In my case, the main circuit board inside the amp had failed completely. After replacing the amplifier unit, all speaker outputs and sound quality returned to normal. Initially thought it might be the head unit, but the fact that USB audio, radio, and auxiliary input were all affected simultaneously is a clear indicator of amp failure. The sound system uses a MOST fiber optic network, so when the amp dies, it takes down all audio output. This requires specialized diagnostic equipment and Audi-specific knowledge to properly diagnose and repair. The replacement part needs coding to work with the vehicle systems. This is not a DIY job due to the complexity of the audio system architecture. Based on the symptoms described, strongly recommend having it checked by an Audi specialist who has experience with MOST network diagnostics and MMI system repairs. This is a serious electrical issue that typically requires component replacement rather than repair.

Thanks for the detailed response regarding the amplifier issue. Mine turned out to be exactly what you described, the amp under the passenger seat had failed completely. The radio silence across all inputs including USB audio and auxiliary was the key indicator. After replacement and coding, the volume control and sound quality are back to normal. Would you mind sharing what the repair cost in your case? I paid 850 Euro for parts and labor, wondering if that was reasonable. Has the new amplifier been reliable since your repair? Just want to make sure I wont face similar issues again anytime soon.

Since replacing my faulty bass speaker for 280 Euro, the entire audio system has worked flawlessly. Your case with the amplifier was more complex and expensive than mine, as it turned out I only had a defective speaker causing sound distortion rather than complete audio failure. The volume control, USB audio connectivity, and all car speakers are functioning perfectly after the repair. Having a proper diagnosis made all the difference, when multiple audio sources fail simultaneously, its typically the amp as in your case, but single speaker issues are usually more straightforward to fix. The 850 Euro you paid sounds reasonable for an amplifier replacement, considering the specialized work and coding required. Its significantly more complex than the basic speaker replacement I needed. My repair has been reliable with no sound system issues for the past year, though our fixes addressed different components. The car audio quality remains crystal clear across all input sources.

After getting your feedback about the amplifier, I decided to take my S8 to a certified workshop. Turns out the diagnosis was spot-on, failed amplifier under the passenger seat was causing the complete audio system shutdown. The repair took about 3 hours. They had to remove the seat for proper access, replace the amplifier unit, and code it to work with the car systems. Total cost came to 850 Euro which included both parts and labor. After the fix, all audio connectivity is working perfectly again. The sound quality is actually better than before, crisp and clear whether using the radio, USB audio, or auxiliary input. No more radio silence or sound distortion issues. The technician mentioned these amplifiers typically last many years once replaced, so I should be good for a while. Much better experience than my previous repair attempts at other shops that just kept checking fuses and speakers without identifying the real problem.
