Audi SQ8 Engine Jerks: Coil Pack Failure Alert

Looking for advice on my 2021 Audi SQ8 (16573 km, gas engine) thats been acting up lately. The engine jerks during acceleration and runs rough at idle. Check engine light is on with stored error codes. Had a bad experience at my last mechanic visit and wondering if these symptoms point to ignition coil problems or engine misfires. Has anyone dealt with similar issues? Mainly interested in knowing the likely cause and what kind of repair costs to expect. Want to be better prepared before heading to another shop.

Summary of the thread

The 2021 Audi SQ8 experienced engine jerking during acceleration and rough idling, with the check engine light on, suggesting possible ignition coil failure or engine misfires. Similar issues in other Audi models were resolved by replacing faulty ignition coils and spark plugs, cleaning fuel injectors, and conducting thorough diagnostics. The recommended approach includes testing ignition coils, checking spark plugs, performing a cylinder compression test, and scanning for additional error codes. Addressing these issues promptly is crucial to prevent further damage, such as to the catalytic converter, and ensures smooth engine performance.

As an Audi S5 2018 owner, I experienced very similar symptoms last season. The rough idle, jerking during acceleration, and check engine light perfectly match what turned out to be failed ignition coils and engine misfires on multiple cylinders. The ignition coil failure often creates inconsistent spark delivery, leading to the exact symptoms described. In my case, two ignition coils needed replacement, and the diagnostic revealed carbon buildup was contributing to the engine misfire situation. A proper repair typically involves: Testing all ignition coils, Checking spark plugs condition, Performing cylinder compression test, Scanning for additional error codes, Cleaning fuel injectors if needed This is generally considered a moderate repair job. While not catastrophic for the engine, it should not be ignored as continued misfires can damage the catalytic converter over time. The repair process is straightforward for experienced technicians who regularly work on VAG engines. Most shops can complete the work in one day, assuming parts availability. Consider finding a shop specializing in German vehicles, as they will have the correct diagnostic tools and experience with these specific engine misfire patterns.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the S5. I had nearly identical issues with my SQ8 last month. The engine misfire symptoms cleared up completely after replacing the ignition coils and spark plugs. The rough idle was really concerning at first, but the fix turned out to be pretty straightforward. Did you remember roughly how much the repair cost in your case? Also wondering if youve had any other issues pop up since getting it fixed. My fuel injectors needed a good cleaning too during the service, but everything has been running smoothly since.

Thanks for the update on your SQ8. Happy to hear they got the misfire and rough idle sorted out. My repair actually ended up revealing a small exhaust leak that was contributing to the uneven engine running too. Total bill came to 265 Euro for diagnosing and fixing the exhaust system issue. The service included a thorough check of the crankshaft sensor and oxygen sensor readings to rule out other problems. Since getting it fixed several months ago, the car has been running perfectly with no issues. The fuel injector cleaning made a noticeable difference in how smooth the engine runs at all speeds. My suggestion would be to stay on top of regular maintenance to prevent the ignition coils from failing prematurely again. The timing belt should also be inspected during routine service to catch any potential problems early.

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice about the coil replacements. Wanted to share how my repair went, took the SQ8 to a different shop this time and had a much better experience. The engine misfire was definitely from bad coils, just like suggested here. Total repair came to 450 Euro including parts and labor, plus they found a clogged air filter that needed replacing. The rough idle completely disappeared after they cleaned the fuel injectors and installed new coils. Shop did a full diagnostic scan and found no other issues with the oxygen sensor or other components. Car runs perfectly smooth now during acceleration. Really glad I checked here first, helped me walk in knowing what to expect and not get oversold on unnecessary work. Will definitely stick with this new shop for future maintenance.
