Audi SQ8 Oil Pressure Warning: Sensor Issues Explained

Having issues with my 2020 SQ8. The oil pressure warning lamp keeps coming on, along with a warning light in the cluster and stored error codes. I suspect the engine oil temperature sensor might be failing, but want to confirm before taking action. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and had their temp sensor replaced? Would appreciate hearing about repair experiences and how the workshop diagnosed the issue. Also interested in whether replacing the oil gauge sensor resolved these warnings completely or if additional repairs were needed.

I faced a similar issue with my 2018 S7, also with unusual oil pressure warnings and sensor errors. Having some experience with engine diagnostics, I first suspected a faulty temp sensor. The oil gauge readings were inconsistent, and the car diagnostics showed error codes related to the oil sensor system. Took it to my workshop where they ran a complete check of the oil pressure monitoring system. Turned out the cable connection to the oil temperature sensor was damaged, causing intermittent readings and false warnings. The fix was straightforward, they replaced the wiring harness and connection to the temp sensor. Total cost was 95 Euro including diagnostic time. Since the repair, all warning lights cleared and the oil gauge readings have been stable. Before suggesting specific solutions, could you share: Current mileage on your SQ8, When did these warnings first appear, Are the warnings constant or intermittent, Have you noticed any actual oil pressure or temperature issues, Any recent maintenance or repair work done This would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced with the sensor connections.

My SQ8 has 20702 KM since new and just had its annual service last month. The warnings started appearing intermittently about 2 weeks ago, usually during cold starts. No actual oil pressure or temperature anomalies noticed during driving. The car diagnostics system shows error codes specifically pointing to the automotive sensor circuit. The oil temperature readings seem erratic, jumping between normal and extreme values within minutes. Worth noting that the check revealed oil level and quality are both perfectly fine. Interesting that you mentioned the wiring harness issue. Perhaps checking the temp sensor connections first would make sense before replacing the entire car sensor unit. The price you paid seems reasonable compared to a complete sensor replacement. Would replacing just the connections still require a full system reset using professional diagnostic tools?

Thanks for providing those details. Based on the symptoms you described, especially the erratic temperature readings during cold starts, it definitely mirrors my S7 experience. The jumping values between normal and extreme readings from the temp sensor are a classic sign of wiring or connection issues. Since your oil level and quality check out fine, starting with the wiring inspection makes sense before committing to a full engine temperature sensor replacement. In my case, the wire insulation had worn through near a connection point, causing those inconsistent readings in the car diagnostics. And yes, even just fixing the connections required a complete system reset using professional diagnostic tools to clear the stored error codes. The automotive sensor system needs proper calibration after any work on the circuit. When my workshop did the repair, they used their diagnostic computer both to pinpoint the exact connection issue and to reset the system afterwards. The relatively low mileage on your SQ8 also supports the theory of a connection issue rather than a failed temp sensor unit. These sensors typically have a much longer service life unless there is physical damage to the wiring. Have you noticed if the erratic readings become more stable once the engine reaches normal operating temperature? This could help confirm if we are dealing with the same root cause.

Based on your detailed feedback, I will check if the readings stabilize after warm-up. The fact that your car diagnostics pointed to a wiring issue rather than a complete temp sensor failure gives me hope for a simpler fix. Looking at my service history, there was some work done near the oil pan area during the last service which could have disturbed the engine sensor wiring. Those erratic temperature readings between extremes during cold starts match exactly what you experienced with the damaged wire insulation. I will have my workshop inspect the oil sensor connections and wiring harness first. Good to know they will need their diagnostic tools for the system reset even if just repairing connections. The 95 Euro repair cost in your case sounds much better than replacing the entire car sensor assembly. Will update once they check the wiring and run a complete diagnostic scan. Hopefully just dealing with a connection issue like in your situation rather than a failed temp sensor unit.
