Audi TT 2004: Erratic engine, increased fuel consumption and black smoke - lambda sensor defective?

Hi everyone, I have a question. My 2004 Audi TT has been acting up recently. When I accelerate, black smoke comes out of the exhaust, the check engine light is constantly on and it no longer pulls properly. The engine runs totally erratically and twitches when accelerating. As if that wasn't enough, it also draws more fuel than usual. I suspect the lambda sensor could be the culprit, but I wanted to hear your opinions on this. Have any of you had similar problems and how did you get it fixed at the garage? What was your experience? I would appreciate a few tips.

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Audi A3 2006 model. I'm not a professional, but I've had my own experiences. It felt exactly as you describe. I went to the garage and yes, you're right - it was actually the lambda sensor. I was 375 euros poorer, but after that it ran smoothly again. Are there any specific symptoms that have not yet been mentioned? That would be more helpful to give you concrete help. But in principle it sounds very much like the lambda sensor to me.

Thanks for your insight, very helpful! I don't really have any other symptoms that I haven't mentioned yet. My car has 192370 km on it now and the last service was just done, yet the problem still occurred. I think I'll take it to the garage these days and see what they say. Hopefully it won't be more than 375 euros. Thanks again!

Good luck then! 375 euros was a pretty good price in my opinion. But prices can of course vary depending on where you go and what exactly needs to be done. In my case, it was definitely the lambda sensor that had to be replaced and then everything ran smoothly again. As I said, I'm no expert, but in your case I would also guess the lambda sensor. It's best to have it checked out by a workshop. Then please let us know what it was! Hope it's nothing major and that you'll soon be back on the road again!

Yes, I will definitely visit a garage and then report what it was. Your tips are very helpful, thanks again. Hopefully it's just the lambda sensor and nothing else major. Let's see what happens in the next few days. Have a nice weekend and thanks again for the help!

Cables were bitten through by the marten, repaired them, works again, engine control light off again!

Hi PatrickaudiA6, could you please provide more details about the error? What is the exact error code or message you're seeing? This will help in diagnosing the problem more accurately.

Hi Gabydsh, even though the lambda sensor is new, it could be faulty or there might be an issue with the wiring or connection. I would recommend checking the wiring and connectors for any signs of damage or corrosion. If everything looks good, you might want to consider getting the sensor tested to ensure it's functioning properly. Please let us know how it goes.
