Thanks for sharing your experience. This sounds exactly like what I am dealing with. My active air flap seems to be the culprit causing the car overheating issues. Really helpful to know about the temporary fix with keeping the flaps open while waiting for parts. Did you remember roughly how much the whole repair ended up costing? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other cooling system problems?

Followed up with a mechanic last week and got everything sorted. The active air flap fault was definitely causing the overheating, just like suspected. Total repair bill came to 590 Euro for replacing the faulty electromechanism on the flap motor assembly. The car has been running perfectly since the fix, no more temperature spikes or warning lights. Cooling system is working exactly as it should. A proper diagnostic scan confirmed everything is functioning correctly now. Looking back, keeping those flaps manually open was a smart temporary solution while waiting for the parts to arrive. Would have shared the cost info earlier but wanted to wait until the repair was complete to give accurate numbers. The original fault code is now cleared and the engine temperature stays stable even during long drives. Really glad this turned out to be just the flap motor issue and not something more serious with the cooling system.

The advice really helped point me in the right direction. Took the car to a certified Audi shop yesterday. Their diagnostic scan confirmed the active air flap system failure. The mechanic showed me how the grille shutter was stuck, causing the overheating. Total repair cost was 650 Euro, which included new flap motor assembly and programming. The shop was thorough and even showed me the old damaged parts. Definitely better experience than my last mechanic visit. Car has been running perfectly since, no more check engine light or temperature issues. Really relieved it wasnt a bigger problem. Worth every cent to have it properly diagnosed and fixed by specialists who knew what they were doing.

Had similar issues with my 2012 Audi A5 2.0T. The car overheating symptoms matched exactly, temperature gauge climbing and check engine light activation. A diagnostic scan revealed the grille shutter system was malfunctioning. The flap motor that controls airflow had failed, preventing proper cooling system operation. This issue requires attention since constant overheating can lead to serious engine damage. The repair involved replacing the complete grille shutter assembly and reprogramming the control module. Not a simple DIY job as it requires specialized diagnostic equipment and coding. While waiting for parts, had to manually secure the flaps in open position as a temporary fix to prevent overheating. The complete repair took about 4 hours at the shop. This is a known issue in various VAG models from that era. Would recommend finding a shop with Audi certification and proper diagnostic tools, as generic OBD readers might not accurately pinpoint the grille shutter malfunction.
