Audi TT Transmission Issues, Sensor vs Major Repair

My automatic transmission in a 2015 TT has been acting up lately. The transmission warning light came on, followed by rough shifting and grinding noises. The car went into limp mode and the gearbox is now shifting erratically. My scanner shows transmission-related error codes. I suspect the transmission oil temperature sensor might be faulty, as these symptoms seem to match what I found online. Has anyone dealt with similar transmission issues and had their temperature sensor replaced? Looking for feedback on diagnostic steps and repair experiences. Mainly interested in knowing if replacing the sensor fixed similar symptoms, or if I should be looking at other potential causes. Also wondering about typical repair costs and if this is something that requires a complete transmission repair or just sensor replacement? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

I experienced a very similar transmission repair issue with my 2013 Audi A3. As someone with some mechanical experience, I initially thought it was just a sensor problem, but it turned out the gear shifting problems were caused by low transmission fluid. The symptoms matched yours exactly, transmission warning light, rough shifting, and the car went into limp mode. The temperature sensor was giving incorrect readings because the oil level was too low, causing overheating problems in the transmission. The workshop did a complete diagnostic scan, checked the transmission fluid level and condition, and tested all sensors. They found the oil level significantly below minimum, which was causing the temperature sensor to read incorrectly and the transmission to protect itself. The total repair cost was 365 Euro, which included: Fresh transmission fluid, New filter, Labor for diagnostic and fluid change, Sensor testing To help diagnose your issue more precisely, could you share: Current mileage, When was the last transmission service done, Are there any fluid leaks visible under the car, What specific error codes is your scanner showing This could help determine if you are facing a similar oil level issue or if there might be other underlying problems with your transmission.

Just had my car serviced at 160474 KM and the technician performed extensive testing of the gearbox sensor system. It turned out that my automatic transmission issues were indeed related to a faulty temperature sensor, causing inaccurate readings and overheating problems. The transmission sensor replacement solved my erratic shifting completely. Total repair cost was 450 Euro including diagnostics and labor. The gearbox is now operating smoothly with no warning lights or limp mode issues. I would suggest getting all transmission related codes properly scanned before replacing parts. In my case, the warning lights and rough shifting were directly linked to the temperature sensor malfunction.

Thanks for sharing your repair experience. My 2013 A3 initially showed similar symptoms, but as I mentioned earlier, mine was related to low fluid levels rather than a faulty sensor like yours. Its good to see the transmission sensor replacement resolved your automatic transmission issues completely. Your case reinforces the importance of proper diagnostics, while symptoms can appear similar, the root causes of transmission issues can vary significantly. Looking back, the repair cost difference makes sense. My fluid-related fix was cheaper at 365 Euro compared to your 450 Euro sensor replacement. Both scenarios caused similar symptoms: warning lights, rough shifting, and limp mode, but required different solutions. This type of gearbox sensor failure seems somewhat common in these models. The temperature sensor plays a crucial role in protecting the transmission from overheating, so when it fails, the system defaults to safe mode, causing those erratic shifting patterns you experienced. Your tip about getting proper diagnostic scans is spot-on. Transmission issues can be complex, and accurate diagnosis saves both time and money in the long run.

Thanks for the helpful responses about the transmission issues. Its great to share how these problems get fixed. The gear shifting problems I experienced are totally resolved now after the temperature sensor replacement. Getting those error codes properly scanned definitely helped pinpoint the exact issue. For anyone else facing similar transmission issues with warning lights and erratic shifting, I strongly recommend having the sensor system thoroughly checked. The 450 Euro repair cost was worth it since it fixed the overheating problems and got my transmission working normally again. Looking back, Im glad I didnt jump straight into more extensive transmission repairs before checking the sensors. The whole experience taught me that similar transmission warning symptoms can have different root causes. Whether its low fluid like experienced or a faulty sensor like in my case, proper diagnostics are key to getting the right fix.
