Auris Diesel Smoke and Power Loss
Summary of the thread
A 2015 Toyota Auris diesel is experiencing reduced engine power, a warning light, acrid smoke, and a pungent odor from the exhaust. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the particulate filter, possibly due to a defective exhaust back pressure sensor. The problem was confirmed to be a faulty sensor, which was replaced, resolving the issue.

How do I know if it's struggling to regenerate? Are there specific indicators? Could a faulty sensor really cause the strong exhaust smell?

Mine failed to regenerate due to a faulty sensor, that's how the mechanic found out. The smell comes from the soot building up because the filter isn't being cleaned. Considering your symptoms and mileage, I'd advise a workshop visit for a diagnostic assessment.

The exhaust back pressure sensor was indeed defective, just as you suggested. The total repair cost was 245€. Thanks again for your help!

I have a similar issue with my Auris. Reduced power, smoke, and the warning light sound familiar. Have you checked the exhaust back pressure sensor? It's a common failure, and relatively inexpensive to replace. Is the car struggling to regenerate?
