Auris Gear Shift Indicator Problem

Alright, I'm officially stumped. I've got a 2012 Toyota Auris with a gasoline engine and about 175,000 km on the clock. Recently, the gear shift indicator on the dashboard has gone haywire. It's not possible to engage the gears, the automatic transmission shifts really weirdly, and sometimes it feels like the gearbox is slipping or shifting really uncleanly. I even get grinding noises sometimes. I plugged it into a reader and there's definitely an error stored in the memory. To top it all off, the gear selection display in the speedometer is just blank. After some research I think it may be a defective control unit. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? I'm dreading what this is going to cost me!

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Toyota Auris is experiencing issues with the gear shift indicator, leading to erratic shifting and occasional grinding noises. The problem is linked to a P0705 error code, indicating a Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction. The likely cause is a defective control unit, and the suggested solution is to have it repaired at a workshop, which may be costly.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Dude, that sounds rough! I had almost the EXACT same thing happen with my Auris a while back. The gear indicator going nuts was the first sign, then the shifting got super clunky. Is it throwing any specific error codes?

Thanks for the reply! I'm pulling a P0705 code - Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction. Did you get the same code? What did you end up doing to fix it? I'm trying to avoid getting completely ripped off by the mechanic.

Yep, P0705 was the culprit for me too. Honestly, I tried a few things myself, but in the end, I had to bite the bullet and take it to a workshop. It sounds like we had the same root cause. They told me it was a defective control unit. It's not a fun fix, I'm afraid.

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Thanks a lot for confirming, though! At least now I know what I'm dealing with and won't be completely blindsided by the workshop. I'll brace myself for a hefty bill – they quoted me around 1000€ for the repair. Appreciate the help!
