Auris Hybrid Coolant Loss

Hi, I've got a 2013 Toyota Auris hybrid with 160,648 km on the clock. Recently, the check engine light came on and the error memory has an error stored. I checked the coolant level and it was really low. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2013 Toyota Auris hybrid experienced a check engine light and low coolant level. Possible causes for the coolant loss include leaks in the radiator, hoses, or water pump, and issues with the cooling fan or radiator cap. Suggested solutions involved checking for visible leaks, ensuring the cooling fan operates correctly, and considering professional inspection to prevent potential overheating damage. The issue was resolved by identifying a small leak and topping up the coolant at a workshop.

Hey! Low coolant is never good, especially on a hybrid. First, don't drive it far like that! Coolant keeps your engine from overheating, and in a hybrid, it also helps cool the electrical components. When was the last time you topped it up? Have you checked for any obvious leaks? Look around the radiator, hoses, and even under the car after it's been parked for a while. Also, is the cooling fan running normally? Sometimes a bad fan can cause the engine to run hotter, leading to coolant loss. Start with the simple checks like the radiator cap too – a faulty cap can let coolant escape.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't topped it up in a while to be honest. Where exactly should I be looking for leaks? And what does the cooling fan sound like when it's running normally?

Okay, so a 'while' isn't ideal. Coolant checks should be regular, especially with hybrids. When looking for leaks, trace all the coolant hoses (they're usually black rubber) from the radiator to the engine block. Look for any wet spots, drips, or crusty buildup. The water pump is another common leak spot, but it can be tricky to see. As for the fan, when the engine is warm (or the AC is on), you should hear it kick in – a whooshing sound. If it sounds really loud or isn't coming on at all, that's a clue. Honestly, with a hybrid and a potential coolant leak, it might be best to get it checked by a workshop. Overheating the hybrid system can cause serious damage!

Thanks again! I took your advice and brought it to a workshop. Turns out there was a small leak and the system needed a top up! Repair cost was 52€ Appreciate the help!
