Auris reduced engine power

Help! My 2011 Toyota Auris (diesel) is playing up. I'm getting reduced engine power, a warning light on the dash, and it starts so poorly now. The lights are weak and flickering. I scanned for error codes, and there's something stored. Mileage is 109713 km. Could it be voltage drop somewhere?

Sounds like the generator might be faulty. Those symptoms – reduced power, warning lights, poor starting, flickering lights, stored error codes – all point to a charging system issue. I had almost the exact same thing with my old Renault Megane a few years back. Was the battery light on?

Yeah, there's a battery light on in the speedometer along with the other warning light. What was the issue with your Megane?

With my Megane it was a defective generator, and I ended up having to replace it! The voltage regulator packed it in. A defective alternator can cause all sort of weird engine misfire issues and make the car run rough because the ECU isn't getting the right voltage. Best get it to a workshop to check the charging system!

Thanks! You were spot on. Just got it back from the shop – generator was indeed totally shot. Alternator replacement done, and it set me back 960€. Ouch!
