Avalon blank gear indicator
Summary of the thread
A 2020 Toyota Avalon hybrid is experiencing a blank gear shift indicator on the dashboard, improper shifting, and grinding noises. The issue may be linked to a faulty control unit or sensor, as suggested by error codes and symptoms. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle inspected and repaired at a workshop, which confirmed the control unit as the problem.

The gear selector feels normal, not stiff or anything. No other warning lights, just the blank gear indicator and the shifting issues. I read online could be a bad sensor. Where do you suspect?

Okay, the fact that the selector feels normal rules out some mechanical problems, but its difficult to say what sensor exactly. Given the symptoms and error code it really does sound like a faulty control unit. Honestly, for something like that, the best bet is probably getting it checked at the workshop before you start changing components yourself.

Cheers. I was hoping it was something simple, but figured it was the control unit. Workshop confirmed the same. Quoted 1000€ for the repair. Sigh. Thanks for the input!

That sounds like a headache! Is the gear selector itself moving smoothly or does it feel stiff? Any other lights on the instrument panel acting strangely? Could be a dodgy sensor or something weird with the electronics.
