Avalon Hybrid Oil Pressure Warning

I'm having a worrying issue with my 2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid. Recently, the oil pressure warning lamp has started lighting up intermittently and I've noticed some loud mechanical noises coming from the engine. The car has only done 31643 km. I checked the engine oil level, and it seems fine. Could it be just a faulty sensor, or is it something more serious?

Summary of the thread

The 2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid is experiencing an intermittent oil pressure warning light and loud mechanical noises, despite the oil level appearing normal. This issue could be due to a faulty oil pressure sensor, but more serious causes like a clogged oil filter or a defective oil pump are likely, especially given the engine noises. Immediate attention is advised, as low oil pressure can lead to significant engine damage. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle inspected by a professional, and in this case, the problem was resolved by replacing a defective oil pump.

I have an Avalon Hybrid as well, and what you're describing sounds eerily familiar to an issue I encountered not too long ago. The oil pressure warning lamp, combined with the unusual engine noises, definitely points toward a lubrication problem. I would not ignore this. Have you checked the condition of your oil filter? Is there any oil leakage underneath the car? Have you tried connecting a manual oil pressure gauge to check the value?

I haven't checked the oil filter yet, to be honest, but it's probably due for a change anyway. Could a clogged oil filter really cause such a drastic drop in oil pressure? I haven't noticed any oil leakage on the ground, but I'll take a closer look tomorrow. I don't have an oil pressure gauge, unfortunately.

A clogged oil filter COULD contribute, but with those engine noises, I suspect something more significant is at play. It sounds to me like your oil pump might be defective. The low pressure can lead to bearing damage very quickly. I would strongly advise against driving it any further and get it to a workshop as soon as possible. In my case, it was a faulty oil pump, and the repair cost me around 755€. It is worth taking it seriously because ignoring the problem can lead to complete engine failure.

Thank you so much for the advice! I'll get it towed to a trusted workshop first thing tomorrow. Your experience has been invaluable. I am so glad I posted here. I just got the car back from the shop. You were right - the oil pump was defective and needed replacement. The bill came to exactly 755€. Thanks again!
