Avalon Hybrid Power Loss and Misfire
Summary of the thread
A 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid experienced significant power loss, jerking during acceleration, and occasional smoke, with a check engine light indicating a misfire. Possible causes included engine knock or detonation, potentially linked to a faulty knock sensor or deposits in the combustion chamber. The recommended solution was to consult a mechanic, who confirmed the issue was due to combustion chamber deposits, which were cleaned to resolve the problem.

Thanks for the quick reply! Knock sensor, huh? I'm not super familiar with that. Where is that located, and is it something I could potentially check myself, or am I better off just taking it to a mechanic?

Honestly, while you could try to find it and test it, dealing with engine components can be tricky. Given the smoke and misfire code, it might be something more serious, like deposits in the combustion chamber causing pre-ignition. I'd highly recommend taking it to a reputable workshop before you cause more damage. Could get expensive quick!

Alright, thanks for the advice. I was hoping it would be something simple, but you're right, I don't want to risk making things worse. I booked it in with my local mechanic; they confirmed deposits in the combustion chamber was causing the engine knock, and gave it a clean. Cost me 425€, but runs like new now! Thanks again for your help!

Wow, that sounds rough! I have an Avalon too. I had similar symptoms – the jerking, power loss, the whole nine yards. It turned out to be detonation, or engine knock. Have you checked your knock sensor? Maybe that's the culprit.
