Avantime exhaust back pressure sensor malfunction

I've got a 2003 Renault Avantime with a diesel engine and I'm having some trouble. The exhaust back pressure sensor seems to be malfunctioning. I've got a warning light on the dash, and the car is smoking when I accelerate. Also, the DPF isn't regenerating. I suspect the pressure sensor is the culprit. Any ideas?

Sounds similar to what I had with my old Saab 9-3. The exhaust back pressure sensor, or exhaust gas pressure sensor, measures the pressure in the exhaust system. A defective sensor can cause the ECU (engine control unit) to not correctly manage the fuel injection timing and air-fuel ratio, which will increase vehicle emissions. Did you check the wiring to the sensor to be sure it is not damaged?

Thanks for the tip! I'll check the wiring. Where exactly is the exhaust back pressure sensor located? Is it easy to access?

On my Saab it was near the DPF, but I am not sure where it is in your Avantime. Honestly, given all the symptoms you describe - especially the regeneration issue - and the fact that you will probably need to remove the old one and install the new one I'd recommend visiting a workshop. I needed to and it eventually cost me 245€ but the peace of mind was worth it!

Thanks a lot for the advice! I checked the wiring and couldn't see anything obvious. I've decided to take it to a local garage. I will post again when I know if this fixes the issue!
