Avantime high fuel consumption and stalling

Having trouble with my 2002 Renault Avantime gasoline. 107k km. Fuel consumption increased, engine stalls when idling. Check engine light is on, and I see smoke when accelerating. Suspect it might be a defective mass air flow meter. Does this sound plausible?

Sounds very familiar. I had similar issues with my Avantime. Higher fuel consumption, stalling, and the check engine light were all present. Have you checked for any obvious air leaks in the intake? A faulty MAF sensor can definitely cause those symptoms.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't specifically checked for air leaks, but I'll add that to my list. Did you also get smoke when accelerating, and how did you diagnose it for sure? Was it definitely the MAF?

Yes, I also experienced smoke during acceleration. The issue was indeed the MAF sensor. I tried cleaning it first, but the problem returned quickly. Eventually, I took it to a workshop, and they confirmed the diagnosis with a scan tool. They replaced the MAF sensor, and that solved all the problems.

Thanks a bunch for confirming my suspicions! Looks like I'll be heading to the workshop to get it sorted. I got a quote for 365€ for the repair, hopefully that solves it!
