Avantime Immobilizer Problem
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Renault Avantime with a petrol engine experienced an immobilizer issue where the car sometimes started and then died immediately or just cranked without starting. The problem was linked to an error code related to the key signal, suggesting a possible issue with key programming. The solution involved re-syncing the key, which resolved the issue and restored normal operation.

Cheers for the quick reply. Never happened before, just started out of the blue. I only have one key unfortunately. Any idea if a weak battery in the key fob could cause this?

A weak key battery could cause issues, but usually you'd get a low battery warning. Since you're getting immobilizer errors and the engine cuts out, it's more likely the key needs reprogramming or there's a fault in the security system itself. Best get it checked at a workshop.

Thanks, appreciate the help. Took it to a local shop, turns out the key needed re-syncing. Cost me 45€ and she's running sweet again.

Sounds like the anti-theft system is kicking in. Has this happened before, or did it start suddenly? Maybe the remote start system is malfunctioning somehow. Did you try the spare key, just in case it's a problem with the key itself?
