Avantime Oil Pressure Warning

My 2001 Renault Avantime (gasoline engine, 235810 km) has an issue. The oil pressure warning lamp in the speedometer keeps lighting up. Could it be engine damage or just contaminated engine oil? I've checked the oil level; it's fine.

The symptoms you describe can indeed point to oil contamination. When was the last time you performed an oil change? Exceeding the maintenance interval for engine oil can lead to a build-up of sludge and debris, hindering proper lubrication and triggering the warning light. Have you used any oil additives recently?

The oil change was about 18 months ago, maybe 15000 km. No oil additives used. Is that interval too long? And could an oil change really fix this, or am I looking at something worse?

Yes, 15000 km and 18 months is beyond the recommended interval for many oils, especially with city driving. While an oil change might improve the situation, given the symptoms, I highly advise a workshop visit for a comprehensive inspection to rule out potential engine damage. It might save you money in the long run.

I had the oil and filter changed at a local workshop. They confirmed it was just heavily contaminated oil from exceeding the service interval. Total cost was 165€. Warning light is now off.
