Avantime rough running exhaust leak
Summary of the thread
The 2001 Renault Avantime was experiencing rough running and jerking during acceleration, with the check engine light on. The initial suspicion was a bad crankshaft sensor or fuel injectors. However, it was suggested that an exhaust leak could be the cause, as it can affect engine sensors and performance. Upon inspection by a mechanic, a small exhaust leak was identified and repaired, resolving the issue.

An exhaust leak, huh? I hadn't considered that. Where exactly should I be looking for this leak? Is there a particular spot that's more prone to cracking or rusting?

Yes, exhaust leaks are sneaky! Check around the exhaust manifold where it bolts to the engine, and also along the exhaust pipe seams and connections, especially near the catalytic converter. Given the age, rust is a prime suspect. Honestly, though, finding a small leak by ear can be tough. You might want to get it smoke tested at a workshop to pinpoint the exact location.

Thanks for the tip! I took it to my local mechanic, and you were spot on - it was a small leak in the exhaust system. Cost me 265€ to get it fixed. Now it is running smoothly again!

Rough idle and jerking on acceleration? Sounds like an engine misfire! Have you checked for any exhaust leaks? Even a small leak can throw off the engine's sensors and cause it to run poorly. It's often overlooked, but easy to check.
