Avantime Service Required Message and System Errors

I'm having trouble with my 2002 Renault Avantime with a gasoline engine. At 203808 kilometers, it's showing a 'Service Required' message, sporadic errors while driving, occasional flickering of the malfunction indicator, and the audio and navigation system is failing. I've also seen temporary shutdowns and unresponsive control units. An error code is stored. Anyone seen similar issues? Could it be a defective cable connection to the BUS system of the control unit?

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Renault Avantime is experiencing a 'Service Required' message, sporadic errors, flickering malfunction indicators, and failing audio and navigation systems. The issues may stem from a defective cable connection to the control unit's BUS system. A similar problem in another vehicle was resolved by a workshop, which traced the issue to a faulty connection in the control module. The suggested solution is to have a mechanic inspect and repair the cable connections, with an estimated cost of 155€.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Whoa, that sounds familiar! I had almost the exact same symptoms – weird error messages, systems cutting out – with my old Peugeot 407. Audio, navigation, the whole shebang would go haywire! Could it be the cable? I sure hope not... Was a pain to figure out on my car.

How did you resolve the problem with your Peugeot 407? Or at least, how did you figure out what was causing it? Was it a cable connection issue, or something else?

Well, I never actually fixed it myself! After chasing ghosts for weeks, I bit the bullet and took it to a workshop. They ran a full diagnostic and traced it back to a faulty connection in the control module. They re-terminated some connectors and the car was happy again. It ended up costing me about 150€. I'd say a visit to the mechanic is worth it. You could try chasing the error yourself, but it's just not fun.

Thanks for the response! It seems a workshop visit will be beneficial. It seems likely the issue is within the cable connection of the control unit, like you and the mechanic suspected. I’ll tell the mechanic to inspect for damaged cable connection of the control unit, repair the faulty connection and replace damaged cables. The estimated repair cost is 155€.
