Avantime Steering Angle Sensor Issue

I'm having an issue with my 2003 Renault Avantime diesel. The steering effort has increased a lot, feels like power steering failure, and the steering wheel vibrates. Diagnostics point to a defective steering angle sensor. With 66792 km, could faulty coding of the steering angle sensor be the cause? Anyone had similar symptoms?

Hey, I had something similar happen in my old Peugeot 307. Steering got super heavy all of a sudden. Noticed it mostly when parking. Didn't vibrate, though. Could be the sensor like you said, but I'm no expert. Maybe a fuse?

Thanks. I checked the fuse already. Did the issue present intermittently with your Peugeot? Was the fault code specific to the steering angle sensor, or did it indicate a broader issue with the traction control or electronic stability systems? The sensor measures the steering wheel position angle.

Yeah, it was on and off for a bit. Then just stayed heavy. I didn't get any codes read, to be honest. Just took it to a workshop in the end. They sorted it. Sounds like yours is more sensor-specific, though. Probably best to get it checked properly.

Thanks. It seems a professional diagnosis is the next step. I'll visit the workshop and share the result. The repair including sensor replacement and recalibration came to 195€
