Avantime transmission issue
Summary of the thread
The 2003 Renault Avantime is experiencing transmission issues, including unresponsive paddle shifters, rough and slipping gear changes, grinding noises, and the gearbox entering emergency mode. These symptoms, along with a stored error code related to the transmission control unit, suggest a possible defect in the control unit. It is recommended to have the error memory read out to confirm the issue, and if confirmed, a visit to a workshop for repairs is advised.

They are completely dead. The display doesn't react when I use them, and the car stays in whatever gear it was in. Did you also experience the emergency mode?

Yes, emergency mode was definitely part of it. Given your description, it really does sound like the transmission control unit is the culprit. To be absolutely sure, you should let the error memory be read out. If that confirms it, there is probably no way around going to the workshop.

Thanks for confirming. I suspected as much. I will take it to a workshop and have the transmission control unit checked. I expect repair costs of around 1000€.

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms on my Avantime. Are the paddle shifters completely dead, or are they just slow to react? When it happened to me the transmission diagnosis revealed a faulty control module.
