Avensis check engine light fuel consumption

I'm experiencing an odd issue with my 2006 Toyota Avensis diesel. It's got 166380 km on the clock. The check engine light keeps popping up, and I've noticed a significant increase in fuel consumption. I suspect it might be related to the inlet VANOS mechanics being faulty. Could it be a defect in one of the camshaft solenoid valves, or perhaps a power supply issue? Has anyone else run into this, and what should I check before tearing things apart?

VANOS on a diesel? I thought that was a BMW thing... Isn't it more likely to be something like a timing chain issue or maybe even just some oil sludge? Have you noticed any loss of power or engine misfires?

Good point about the BMW VANOS, I didn't think about it that way! Low power or engine misfires are not happening. But, if it's not VANOS, could a faulty camshaft solenoid still cause these symptoms even without misfires? Is there a way to test the solenoid valves before I start looking at the timing chain?

Alright, no misfires is good. But yeah, a bad solenoid valve could still cause problems without the full-blown misfire. Honestly, without proper diagnostic tools, it's hard to say for sure. Maybe it's best to get it checked out by a workshop before you end up chasing ghosts...

Appreciate the cautious advice. It seems like diving in without proper diagnostics would be a waste of time and money. I will take your advice and get a professional to look into the camshaft solenoid valves. Got it diagnosed and replaced - faulty valve and cost me around 250€.
