Avensis high fuel consumption and stalling
Summary of the thread
A 2018 Toyota Avensis with high fuel consumption and occasional stalling issues was reported, accompanied by a check engine light and smoke upon acceleration. Preliminary diagnostics suggested a defective mass air flow (MAF) sensor as the cause. After confirming the MAF sensor's failure through a workshop, replacing it resolved the issues.

Thanks for the quick reply. I visually inspected the air intake for obvious blockages or damage, but didn't find anything immediately apparent. Did your issues resolve completely after replacing the MAF sensor, or were there other underlying problems contributing to the symptoms? I want to be thorough before replacing the sensor.

In my case, replacing the MAF sensor resolved all the issues. It sounds like you've done the basic checks. Given the symptoms and the potential for further damage if the fuel mixture is off, it's probably best to get it checked out by a workshop. They should be able to confirm the MAF sensor is faulty before you replace it. Good luck.

Thanks for your input! I took your advice and brought it in. The workshop confirmed the MAF sensor was defective. The replacement and labor came to 365€. Symptoms are gone now.

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms on my Avensis – though I didn't check the mileage at the time. Higher fuel consumption was the first clue, then the occasional stall. The check engine light sealed it. Have you checked the air intake system for any obstructions or leaks before suspecting the MAF sensor? I would investigate there first.
